The Circle of Choice

“As we power through the decades…our defining moments have an intoxicating ability to lead us full circle. With age comes understanding and wisdom. Decisions are in their simplest form an invitation to choose. With those decisions also comes the power to pick again and again!”

She is doing it!

For the better part of the past 35 years I have yearned to transplant my New Jersey roots to California. Next week, my niece is doing exactly that, at almost exactly the moment I first wanted to in my own life. She is fresh out of graduate school, joining her LA based boyfriend, beginning her career, and allowing chance, and change, and serendipity to play a hand in her life journey. I am really proud of her decision to take action on the unknown. Given similar opportunity to take a leap of faith, to move and experience the unknown, I faulted. In my younger life, I let the “what if’s” seep into my storyline. In my early 20’s I made decisions from a very different place, a more restricted perspective then I have grown into believing in my mid 50’s.

Yet, that is the stuff that breeds the guts of who we are! If I had moved across the country when I graduated from college 34 years ago the tools that I bring to the table of life would be completely different. I may have shown up bold for the relocation and stumbled during the ensuing decades. I may have thrived beyond belief. Think about how many end of the roads we have each faced where we needed to decide. Go left. Or go right. How can we ever really be certain which turn is the correct one to make?

My niece’s upcoming relocation has made me think about those defining moments in my own life. Sometimes, like a squirrel crossing the street, I have scrambled around and darted about.

Decide already!

Other times I have abandoned all fears and marched into saying yes well before I have had time or space to figure out just what I agreed to in the first place. I love those times the very best because they keep me grounded in the present moment and open to exploration. They have come later in life as a direct result of my own personal reinvention and evolution.

What would be different about making decisions if we had no ability to be wrong?

Flipping the script on outcomes changes our ability to let go of how we will do something in favor of why we want it and what we most desire in the first place. If I cannot be wrong then I am fear “less” in the moment. If I can trigger fear “less” then by default I can stay in action. The funny part is that as I grabble with the memories that my niece’s upcoming move provoke in me, I remember the struggle…the should I or shouldn’t I that peppered my thoughts when I opted to stay in the known and out of the unknown.

Defining moments.

As we power through the decades…our defining moments have an intoxicating ability to lead us full circle. With age comes understanding and wisdom. Decisions are in their simplest form an invitation to choose. With those decisions also comes the power to pick again and again! Like a loop in the reel of our lives, the choices and decisions we make can be rewritten, altered, edited, and amended. We may not be able to pick from exactly the same menu of options, yet there is a menu available and it is restricted only by the excuses and limitations we each put in place.

Defining moments.

Our circle of choices is built upon a foundation of awareness. In 1982, I made a choice to remain on the East Coast yet that choice is only one in an evolution of life choices and defining moments. I once again have the choice to relocate and purchase a home in the not too distant future. Coincidentally, this new later in life home will not be far from that California dream of decades past. This choice takes me to Arizona…some place that has also been on my radar for decades! Manifested and decided. Chance, change, and serendipity included. Taking me full circle within my own power of choice and connecting me authentically and with abandon to whatever is next!

  1. I love this! As someone who has followed her gut and had many transitions – some worked out better than others -there are still times I think about those moments of hesitation, those moments when I just went along and didn’t live with reckless abandon – also a choice. I always go back to a Sondheim lyric “the choice may have been mistaken, but the choosing was not.” The beauty of it all is that the older we get the more we have to share with others. We benefit from enhanced appreciation of what life has to offer based on our choices. The best part is, as you point out there are second chances. Enjoy the move!
