Welcome to Memorial Day Weekend tomatoes. I thought a photo of our newest LA state park that brings more urban nature to LA, appropriate.  Ain’t she a beauty ladies?! Rooftop Cinema is back and they have added a new location to the roster.  Yippee!  Frog Spot is jumping for joy because they are back in full swing for the summer season this weekend.  Eegads…there’s that word… summer… again.  If you are in a festive festival tomato mood there are festivals galore and I’ll name a few. I hope you have a wonderful 3-day weekend in honor of Memorial Day. And let’s take a moment to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.

Rooftop Cinema Club

Wow oh Wow!  Rooftop Cinema is not only at their Hollywood location on the rooftop of The Montalbán, now they are hosting their film screenings on the roof deck of LEVEL in DTLA.  Woo Hoo! They are already sold out for many of the shows that’s how much people love their selection of classic, cult and new release film presentations. So, spring in to action ladies and get your tickets now before it is too late.

What could be better than sitting in a comfy deck chair (provided by the Roof Top Cinema Club) with a great view, fresh air, twinkling stars above and a great film? You even get a set of wireless headphones and a blanket with your ticket. And offerings of snacks and cocktails make these events even more enticing tomatoes.

Los Angeles Historic Park 

After 16 years of delays California’s newest state park, Los Angeles Historic Park, situated on a former rail yard with a stunning view of the Los Angeles skyline, opened on April 23 to stellar reviews. The 32-acre expanse with 1,500 trees, grassy hills, picnic areas, a wildlife habitat, drought tolerant bushes, giant lawn and a granite paths that encourage a stroll is a great addition to all the urban parks in LA.  Are we lucky gals? You bet!

It was all possible because of the passage of Proposition 40 which allotted $20 million to fund this downtown centerpiece.  And it is the perfect choice for the Autry’s special event, “Making Space for Urban Nature” on June 3rd. Sounds interesting ladies.

And why is this park historic? Because of the area’s extensive history with Native American tribes that lived there before it all became Los Angeles. And then the Zanja Madre, aka “Mother Ditch”, became a very busy hub for the Southern Pacific Transportation Company over a century ago. As you enter the park from the south (just steps from the Chinatown Gold Line station), you’ll encounter the entrance lined with historic cobblestones that date to the 1880s that were discovered while excavating the park. Ain’t that cool?! You should check it out ladies because Curbed LA calls it the “crown jewel of LA’s urban parks”.

River Fun

Well, ladies, The Frog Spot will be hoppin’ with loads of fun when it reopens this weekend. Frog Spot is the beautiful entry point to the wonders of our city’s revitalized river and Folar, Friends of the Los Angeles River, funds this community oasis on the LA River.  A great place to celebrate Memorial Day weekend and your summer tomatoes. Let’s get hoppin’ gals.

They are bringing back everything that people loved before plus live music, community yoga, literary and educational events. Friends of the LA River partners with LA River Kayak Safari to make Kayak trips available so everyone can enjoy a nature, rapids, wildlife and a kayak adventure smack dab in the middle of an urban jungle. starting Monday May 29! Not to worry tomatoes I hear these guided kayak tours are perfect for beginners and the rapids are mild enough for everyone.  That includes you gals.

Festivals Galore

Memorial Day weekend is chock full of festivals.  You’ve got your Greek Festival in Northridge, Fiesta Hermosa in…yep Hermosa Beach and Topanga Days in Topanga Canyon and each one gives you a taste of something different from the other but they all sound fun and festive ladies.

It’s all Greek but you don’t have to be Greek to enjoy the “Valley Greek Festival” in Northridge. It’s only $3 to attend and both kids and adults over 65 are FREE!  Since 1972, the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce has produced “Fiesta Hermosa”, the largest arts & crafts fair in SoCal, over 400 hundred vendors gals, with the ocean as the backdrop to boot.   For those in need of a nostalgic Bohemian feeling “Topanga Days” definitely meets those needs amongst the beauty of Topanga Canyon.
