LA LIFE: Festivals, Restaurant Revolution, Women’s Equality
I am stunned that I am saying this ladies, but it is time for the “End of Summer Festival” at Descanso Gardens. Eegaads! But there’s still plenty of summery things left to do. If you are a Tomato foodie and want to know how Los Angeles transformed the modern food culture, then check out “The Restaurant Revolution.” It’s also time to rock n’ roll old school at “The Venice Beach Music & Art Festival.” And Tomatoes, Sunday August 26, is the day we celebrate the passage of the 19th Amendment. YAHOO!
August 25. Venice Beach Music Fest
The “Venice Beach Music and Art Fest” is celebrating its 13th year with a stellar line up of diverse music, art, dance, literature and street performers along the boardwalk by the sea. And it is totally FREE for the whole day Tomatoes! Methinks I like the sound of that!
The Venice Beach Music Fest celebrates the creative spirit in all of us to ensure that the historical creative spirit and the original intent of Venice is kept vibrant. The full day of entertainment will be in Windward Plaza Park from 11am – 7:30pm. (Windward Plaza Park is at 1 Windward Avenue, beyond the west end of the street in the park). It’s fun in the sun at the beach Tomatoes and by attending you can make a difference for the Westside Food Bank.
August 26. Restaurant Revolution
The modern food revolution might have started elsewhere, but L.A. chefs and restaurants jumped to the head of the line and created the way we dine today. Doesn’t that make an LA Tomato proud?! “Restaurant Revolution” is part of the “LA Made Cultural Series.” Tomatoes can join restaurateur Piero Selvaggio and historian and author Charles Perry for a discussion of how LA created modern and multicultural dining. Woo Hoo for us Tomatoes.
Others on the panel include Akasha Richmond, former private chef for Michael Jackson who owns Akasha restaurant; and Jet Tila, whose family opened one of the first Thai restaurants in LA. And it will be moderated by historian and journalist Richard Foss.
“LA Made” is a cultural series featuring free music, dance, theater, and conversations with local entertainers at the various libraries throughout our City. You never know what wonderful LA Made event is happening near you Tomatoes.
August 26. Women Equality Day
It is an amazing day Tomatoes when we commemorate the historic 98th anniversary of women FINALLY winning the vote in the US. As you can imagine there are many ways to celebrate: “She is History” at Theatre West is one way and attending the screening of “Seeing Allred” in the presence of THE Gloria Allred is another. Wow! Difficult choice Tomatoes.
“She is History” is an evening of inspiring, enlightening, funny and empowering theatre. This family-friendly, herstorical full-length play is about women who made and make history. And “Why We Know More About Kim Kardashian than Abigail Adams?”
You might also enjoy a free community event with the City of West Hollywood where THE one and only Gloria Allred will be a guest and the documentary “Seeing Allred”, about her important journey fighting for women’s rights will be presented. A panel discussion with local advocates will be included with a call to action reception!
August 29. End of Summer Celebration
Boo Hoo! Since the end of summer is inevitable, you can celebrate in style at the beautiful Descanso Gardens. The gardens will stay open extra late for this wonderful bon voyage summer event. A beautiful sunset and stargazing with the sounds of live music are on the agenda so bring your handy flashlight along. Don’t want you Tomatoes getting lost in the dark.
Grab a cold drink and wander through the gardens to the tunes of “The Flashdance DJs” while celebrating the end of summer. And be sure to reserve ahead of time online Ladies. If it is any consolation gals, it’s pretty much always summer in beautiful and sunny LA.
