Miss Peggy Lee: In Her Own Words and Music
Great performance. Great performance space.
Walking into The Green Room 42, the new snazzy and classy performance space in the super cool Yotel Hotel on 10th and 42nd, one truly is transported to a different time and place.
It oozes elegance, and is the perfect spot to see a new one-woman show about legendary singer and songwriter Peggy Lee.
Miss Peggy Lee: In Her Own Words and Music was developed by the star of the piece, the fabulous Cady Huffman, and the writer and director of the show (who is also an awesome singer) Will Nunziata.
During the one hour and ten minutes of this show, we see Cady giving a luminous performance, (backed up by some wonderful musicians) singing the songs that Peggy Lee wrote (did you know she was a prolific writer?) and drawing the audience into her world, starting with growing up in Fargo, North Dakota, where she dreamed of being a star.
Cady becomes Ms. Lee, through her voice, her mannerisms, the costume and wig, but also through the heartbreaking stories she tells. I felt incredible empathy for the singer because she was a groundbreaking artist, who yearned to have both a robust career and love, but seemingly could only succeed in her profession.
Although the performances of Miss Peggy Lee: In Her Own Words and Music have concluded at The Green Room 42, I am certain this show will have life again. Next time it plays, be sure to grab tickets.
