Roof Top Park
It’s back, the SALESFORCE roof top park is reopening July 1st after nine months of being closed for repairs. Should you want to be the first in line when the transit center, grand hall, food trucks and 5.6 acre park reopen, you will need to be the early bird and get there at 6 a.m. Hopefully also opening on the first, is the most fun way to get to the park. Not by a boring old escalator or elevator, but by a brand new downtown gondola system with a 20 passenger glass cabin. It will connect Mission Square to the rooftop park.
The public park on the top is planted with 600 trees, and 16,000 plants featuring an amphitheater, gardens, trails, open grass areas, children’s play space, a restaurant and café. For you NYC’ers, this rivals the High Line Park, and includes both active and quiet areas featuring organized events like concerts and fairs, as well as unstructured natural stings. The event calendar has not yet been published, but this is sure to be a hot spot for visitors and locals as well. The rooftop park hours are currently 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. www.salesforcetransitcenter.com
Upcoming Theatre Events
June 23-July 9. The Oldest Living Cater Waiter
Summer is always a good time to watch live theatre (well, ok, any time is really). There are some great ones coming up. Michael Patrick Gaffney has a hysterical one-man show The Oldest Living Cater Waiter. The show offers up delicious insights into his complicated and hilarious careers as both a professional actor and a high-end waiter to the stars. Gaffney cooks up numerous characters from his past with just the right amount of sauciness, Shakespeare, and a soupçon of self-discovery.
Gaff, as his theatre family calls him, has created a show that allows you to dive into the artists mind, heart, and soul. At the same time, he revels in his split life as a catering waiter to make ends meet in the crazy expensive Bay Area. June 23 – July 9. Gateway Theatre www.42ndstmoon.org
July 7. Mamma Mia
Can’t get enough Abba? Me either, so San Jose Stage Company is now presenting Mamma Mia through July 7th. This rousing rendition brings the nostalgia of unforgettable ABBA tunes with friendship, feeling and feminism. We love that tomatoes, don’t we? www.thestage.org
Once at the Gateway
The Tony- Award winning best musical ONCE is currently delighting audiences at the Gateway Theatre in SF. Based on the 2007 movie, ONCE tells of an Irish musician who learns to love and dream again through a fateful week with a Czech immigrant. Heart-breakingly romantic but also bursting with joy and humor, ONCE features a lively folk score – with the onstage actors playing their own instruments – and is the only score to have won an Oscar, Grammy, Tony, and Olivier Award. ONCE demonstrates the power that music has to connect us all. Save 20% on tickets through Facebook by using the code ONCE20. www.42ndstmoon.org
A Musical Version of As You Like It
It’s time for free Shakespeare in the park with As you Like it: a new musical. This year the festival will present an original musical featuring nine songs by the Kilbanes, a bay area indie rock duo. This comedy, for the unfamiliar, is about the love between young lovers who meet in the corrupt court of Duke Frederick. To avoid political persecution both must flee separately into exile before exploring their relationship.
SFShakes has done a brilliant job developing this new musical version of As You Like It. They asked themselves and the and community, ‘What does the Court represent? What does it mean to go into the Forest? What does it mean to be exiled, now and in the near future?’ and most importantly ‘What does it feel like to experience love – this feeling that all human beings, no matter their circumstances, seem to have in common?’ They even queried their neighbors experiencing homelessness to assist them as they shared their own stories in workshops and in rehearsals, their own humanity and their own stories.” Performances in Pleasanton, Cupertino, Redwood City, and SF. www.sfshakes.org
Soft Serve
Loving Cup – 2356 Polk St. Loving Cup’s non-fat flavors include chocolate, vanilla, or vegan banana. Choose one, and then have your toppings mixed in at one of their three locations. It should be noted that there is also the option of rice pudding, an equally smart choice.
Gott’s Roadside -Dipped cones are everything, and Gott’s has its own stand in the Ferry Building to provide them. Choose from tart, vanilla, Dutch chocolate, fior di latte, coffe, or salted caramel, then have it dipped in cherry, chocolate, peanut butter, or blue raspberry and topped with mochi and sprinkles
Souvla 517 Hayes St. – Though this soft-serve is actually frozen Greek yogurt, it makes the cut for its creamy tartness, and selection of fine toppings. Get some swirled into a cup, then top it with sour cherry, pieces of baklava, or Greek olive oil with chunks of sea salt.
