March 1. Stay at Home and Read a Book Ball
This Sunday, any time, park yourself on a bench, your cozy couch, a blanket in a grassy area or just stay in bed with a great book for the Library Foundation’s 32nd “Stay Home and Read a Book Ball” to support the LA Public Library. How luverly, Tomatoes.
“Stay at Home and Read a Book Ball” is the Library Foundation’s longest-running and most-beloved “non-event.” What a relief to not have to get dressed up and drive across town to attend a fancy gala. Grab a glass of champagne or some chocolate while you are at it and pick one or several good books to read. While you’re having fun reading, support the Library by donating what you would have spent for night on the town. RSVP by donating at LFLA.org/StayHome or text the word Library to 41444 to receive a secure link to give from your phone. All proceeds support the Library’s Cybernauts, trained tech-support staff in Library branches that provide one-on-one technical assistance and group training for patrons with computer related questions. Cybernauts help everyone access digital resources and participate in their economy, democracy, and society more fully.
March 10. Twisted Broadway 3
Theatre LA Cares, LA’s newest producing company, will present its 3rd benefit concert “Twisted Broadway 3” at Vitello’s, with a fab cast, musical direction by Jan Roper, directed by Linda Kerns and produced by Susan Grace. It will be the most fun Tomatoes can have while supporting the Red Cross Australia Animal Rescue.
And again, Vitello’s is the place this wonderful event is happening. I have no doubt it will be a blast and will sell out fast. Did I just rhyme Tomatoes?! And you will be helping to raise money for a very important cause, Red Cross Animal Rescue. Brush fires in Australia have burned millions of acres, claimed the lives of an estimated 1 billion animals, and devastated families. And if you can’t attend please consider making a donation at www.redcross.org.au
till May 18. With Pleasure
Art loving Tomatoes can regain an appreciation of the Pattern and Decoration Art movement that at one time flourished and then fell by the wayside of art history and has remained overlooked. Moca’s “With Pleasure: Pattern & Decoration in American Art, 1972-1985” is the first full accounting of this movement undertaken by a major museum and it is long overdue Tomatoes.
This first full-scale scholarly North American survey of the groundbreaking yet understudied Pattern and Decoration art movement includes painting, sculpture, collage, ceramics, textiles, installation art, and performance documentation and features forty-five artists from across the United States. “With Pleasure” examines the Pattern and Decoration movement’s embrace of forms traditionally labeled as feminine, domestic, ornamental, or craft-based and thought to be inferior to fine art. The Pattern and Decoration, AKA P&D, contemporary art movement is comprised of a majority of female artists. Yeah! Feminism contributed to the shape and development of this art movement which has suffered from a lack of study, though it was critically received, and commercially successful from the mid1970s to the mid-1980s. So, perhaps, Tomatoes, visiting this exhibition is a great way to celebrate the start of Women’s History Month by educating ourselves about this underrated feminist art movement.
March 6. True Stories: Tales from Herstory
What could be better way to celebrate Women’s History Month than spending the evening at the Skirball with a lineup of powerhouse women telling their incredible stories? “True Stories: Tales from Herstory” promises to be entertaining and engaging and is part of the Ensemble Studio Theatre LA “True Story” reading series, and hosted by actress, writer, and artistic director Lizzy Ross, Tomatoes.
Included are performances by Oscar-nominated actress, author, and podcaster Quinn Cummings; retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel and writer Terre Fallon-Lindeth; bestselling author and graphic novelist Cecil Castellucci; writer-performer and “Wild Wild Christian” author Simone McAlonen; NAACP Theatre Award–nominated actress Angela Bullock; and TV writer, playwright, and essayist Jihan Crowther. Wow, oh Wow, Tomatoes!
