Now at the Met: About Time, Fashion and Duration

After six months of postponements, the Met has opened it’s 2020 Costume Institute’s Exhibit and it is well worth the wait. The exhibition traces a century and a half of fashion—from 1870 to the present—along a disruptive timeline, on the occasion of The Met’s 150th anniversary. Employing Henri Bergson’s concept of la durée (duration), it explores how clothes generate temporal associations that conflate past, present, and future. Virginia Woolf serves as the “ghost narrator” (voiced by Nicole Kidman, Meryl Streep, and Julianne Moore) of the exhibition.

All of the garments are black to emphasize changes in silhouette, except at the conclusion of the show, where a white dress from Viktor & Rolf’s spring/summer 2020 haute couture collection, made from upcycled swatches in a patchwork design, serves as a symbol for the future of fashion with its emphasis on community, collaboration, and sustainability. The show opens on Thursday, October 29, at The Met Fifth Avenue, 1000 Fifth Ave. and will be on through February 7, 2021. Get details.

Nov. 13- Jan. 2. Magic of Lights – Jones Beach

Magic of Lights is a dazzling, drive-through holiday lights experience featuring favorite holiday scenes and characters of the season using the latest LED technology and digital animations. Experience Magic of Lights from the comfort and safety of your own car as you wind through the sparkling path that includes the Blizzard Tunnel, 12 Days of Christmas, Winter Wonderland, and The Night Before Christmas.

Escape 2020 when the LuminoCity Festival returns to Randall’s Island. It features all new light art installations spanning several acres! Each of the three parks illuminates the night with beautiful sculptures inspired by nature, history, and magic!

Wander through a wonderland of ancient civilizations, luminated jungles, and 30ft. art displays. Visit five different worlds such as the Mysterious Forest, Dangerous Dunes, Forgotten Ruins, Hidden Land of Hria, and Mystical Moon Land, and much more. 20 Randall’s Island Park.
