LA LIFE: Father’s Day, Dueling Piano’s, Audio Play, Heart Health, Art Fair
It’s Father’s Day Weekend and perhaps the father in your life might like to celebrate with a nap… or two. If not, The Petersen Auto Museum might be right up his alley. The First Fridays series is back at the Galleria with “Dueling Pianos”. The diverse and award-winning Chalk Repertory is bringing you, “Chalk Lines” a unique audio play experience. Guess what is close to my heart? “Women’s Heart Health.” “The Other Art Fair” is jam packed with art pieces that are other worldly. Check out this week’s fascinating podcast. June -October Dueling Pianos
A brand-new show, “Dueling Pianos,” brings First Fridays back to The Sherman Oaks Galleria. How clever and entertaining! The pair of pianists will riff off of each other, challenge each other, and take turns performing popular music which promises to be full of great fun, Tomatoes.
Next up is Friday July 2nd. The Dueling Piano shows are seated, socially distanced events with shows at 7, 8 and 9pm but you need to register ASAP because free tickets are on a first come first serve basis. And if you would like a pair of headphones, be sure to check in early as those are also available on a first come first serve basis. Safety protocols are in place so you can really relax and rock to the beat of 2 fab pianists doing their thing!

Launching June 19 Chalk Lines
The Chalk Repertory continues to champion the diverse voices of LA with “Chalk Lines.” The audio play tour series, directed by the talented Jennifer Chang, is free and can be experienced from home or on location at each site with a mobile device. Chalk Lines brings unsung landmarks in LA to life, Tomatoes. Cool huh?!
Talented writers and actors with a common vision and a shared perspective are behind the new audio play series, “Chalk Lines”, with 5 short plays exploring the communities of Leimert Park, Historic West Adams, and Expo Park, each with their own special culture and history. Great storytelling at its best, Tomatoes.
Chalk Repertory Theatre is dedicated to making Los Angeles theatre expansive, inclusive, non-traditional, and rule-breaking while partnering with a variety of spaces. Five graduates of the MFA Theatre program at the University of California, San Diego, founded the company in the fall of 2008. Chalk Rep makes big theatre in small spaces, intimate theatre in public spaces and innovative theatre in overlooked spaces. Their work is made possible by grants from the LA Department of Cultural Affairs, The Ahmanson Foundation, and the Los Angeles County Arts Commission and from public donations. Though the Chalk Lines Series is free please consider donating when you watch.
Petersen Auto Museum
The Peterson Auto Museum is now open with pre-purchase tickets. Anytime is a great time to visit but with Father’s Day on Sunday this might be perfect for the Dad in your life. I have to admit, even though I’m not a car aficionado, the cars in the exhibits tickle me pink, Tomatoes.
A trip through The Petersen Automobile Museum is a fascinating ride encompassing more than 100,000 square feet, featuring more than 250 rare and classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles from around the world. Not only does it present the automobile, but the museum also explores the impact cars have had on American life and culture using LA as the main example. Methinks the man and/or father in your life might LOVE a visit to The Petersen Automotive Museum. And you will too because their collections of historic and fancy swanky autos are amazing, Tomatoes.
Women’s Heart Health
I have a thing or two to say about our heart health, Gals…
#1: every woman of a certain age should have a cardiologist on their team of physicians and… #2: every woman should routinely have their heart health checked. Why?! Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States and kills over 50,000 women a year. That’s why.
I have to admit that I have a personal relationship with heart disease, Tomatoes, and unfortunately, like so many others, my heart disease went undiagnosed for many years until my symptoms became scary. Luckily, I had added a female cardiologist to my team a year before because my previous male cardiologists did not seem to take me seriously. And good thing I did. When my symptoms worsened, I saw her immediately and after tests was diagnosed with the female specific “Coronary Microvascular Disease” or Small Vessel Disease. And let me just say that my symptoms were not chest pain. My pain was located in the neck and throat area accompanied by severe shortness of breath and dizziness and only occurred when walking. Just be aware that the pain being located in the chest is not always the case. I’m not sharing this for any other reason than to highlight this particular heart disease and to be proactive bringing more awareness to women about the importance of their heart health and I will say it again…adding a cardiologist to their health team.
I was so proud to be a part of the Heart Health Panel at the 2020 Virtual Three Tomatoes Renewal Summit last June. I hope you will watch this panel discussion or watch again, if it’s been a while, and my wish is that it will inspire you to have a serious look at your heart health.
The panel moderated by Valerie Smaldone, features Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, Spokesperson, Go Red for Women, American Heart Association, Bob Roth, CEO of the David Lynch Foundation, and me sharing my story. We discussed how heart disease in women often goes undiagnosed, causes of heart disease, the effects of stress on the heart and how exercise and meditation can help. My heart will be full of joy if you watch, and it gives you a new perspective.
