Roving
For a good dose of architecture, our roving photographer Nicole Freezer Rubens says go visit the 7.5 acre grounds of Kips Bay Towers. Completed in 1965, the brutalist style residential condominium complex was designed by by I.M. Pei, S.J. Kessler and James Ingo Freed. It consists of 2 apartment buildings, 20 stories each, housing a 4000 resident community. The complex is spread across 3 city blocks, from 30th to 33rd Street, between First and Second Avenues and includes a 3 acre landscaped garden.
Nicole personally loves the geometric heft of the site and it’s balance between buildings, sky and grounds, offering an unusual amount of open space surrounding a New York City building. This mid-century relic still stands out from its many white brick counterparts, developed in the 1960’s. Nicole says, “In my opinion, Kips Bay Towers has stood the test of time.” Nicole is the author of The Long Pause and the Short Breath. Follow her on Instagram@nfrconsult.
Gorillas and Dinosaurs on Park Avenue
If you stroll Park Avenue between 34th and 38th Street you’ll see a very fun art installation sponsored by the Patrons of Park Avenue (POPA). The iconic polygonal shaped animal sculptures, including Rexor the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Mojo the Gorilla, and Baloo the Bear, are the creations of world-renowned artist, Idriss B
Born and raised outside Paris, France, Idriss B. has shown an interest in art since childhood. With decades worth of experience helping to create retail and window displays for luxury brands such as Dior, Moncler, Coach and Michael Kors, Idriss B. launched his unique artistic collection of origami-polygonal shaped animal sculptures in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and now, New York City. Feb. 20. Free Flatiron Tour Celebrates Presidents
Head to 23rd Street in front of the Flatiron Building for a free 90-minute guided tour that explores the connection between U.S. presidents and the rich history of the Flatiron District. Learn how former presidents like Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant are tied to the historic area. For example, the Worth Monument, an iconic obelisk on Fifth Avenue and Broadway served as the presidential front row seat during parades and celebrations.
