LA Style Stories: Daytime Sparkle and Dress Up

Daytime Sparkle

I love wearing high shine during the day. I mean, why save the sparkle and the whimsey for evening? The key to pulling off daytime sparkle is choosing the right supporting pieces. My sequins skirt, Amazon, is in a neutral champagne color, which makes it very easy to tone down. I’ve paired it with an oversized white blouse, H&M, that I’m wearing partially tucked.

I’ve pushed up the sleeves on my fitted denim jacket, Juicy Jeans, to really expose the very long unbuttoned sleeves of my blouse. My, Steve Madden, suede pumps in brown really support and enhance the color of my skirt as does my brown vintage, Gucci, handbag especially with its ’70’s orange contrast stitching. Other than my jacket, my supporting pieces are neutral and within the same range of color for cohesiveness. The denim jacket, aside from style, gives that casual laid back feeling that we, in LA live by.

Dress-Up

I’m going to an event that is dressy, not “black-tie” so I’m going with a contemporary “Gatsby” vibe. My long smoky purple kimono, Zara, embellished with gunmetal and silver bugle beads is definitely a “statement” piece. I replaced the 2 inside buttons with snaps (for security) and snapped them criss-crossed to create a more fitted, dropped and elongated waist that was popular in the 20’s, it also works well for my body type. I’ve added a salmon/pink feather wrap, Amazon, around my neck and a crochet beaded beanie, Amazon.

Both of these dramatic pieces frame my face and keep the eye upward so there is no need for much jewelry. My rhinestone encrusted shoes, Steve Madden, lend a contemporary and modern feel while creating balance. I made a conscious decision to lean into a particular era and with the addition of some contemporary pieces, I’ve created a look rather than a costume.

*Style Tip for low-cut garments, where a bra is not possible, I suggest, Boob-Tape, it really works! It’s easy enough to use and directions are provided for every possible neckline. If you’re worried about a potential wardrobe malfunction, use double-sided tape to adhere your garment to your skin.
