Style Story: An Unexpected Pair

I’ve always been a huge fan of black and brown, together. The combination is always unexpected and looks great on everyone. My long sweater knit dress, Donna Karen Signature, is in a deep rich shade of chocolate brown. The silhouette, though simple, is beautifully cut to barely hang on to the body. I bought it ages ago for an evening event and styled it with gold jewelry and a brown and black silk wrap.

Today, I’ve paired it with a black cropped ribbed knit turtleneck, All Saints for a casual daytime look. This particular turtleneck is very thin and lays flat against the dress so there is no bulkiness and because it’s cropped, it gives my very short torso the illusion of length. Can you see how the black, moves into, the brown for an almost, ombre’, effect? That’s achieved through, piece placement…the darker colour, fading, into the lighter. This would not work if the top was brown and the dress, black. My chunky boots, Gisele Tune, reintroduce, black, and add the right amount of loftiness for a balanced, cohesive, and unexpected pairing.

If you haven’t thought of wearing this winning colour combo, I encourage you to give it a try. You’ll be right en-pointe, in one of Fall’s strongest trends and you’ll absolutely love how it looks on you.

style-tip: strategic piece placement works only if you know exactly what you’re working with in regard to your body shape and the aesthetic style you’re trying to achieve.

*please treat your wardrobe well. many people worked very hard to get it to you.
