LA Life: Farm Day, Sonnets, Festivals, Style, Art & Tours
Whoop-de-do! It’s Farm Day tomorrow! Lady Penelope made me chuckle out loud. Two is trending with two special Día De Los Muertos Celebrations, two fab Picasso Exhibits in town and two Architectural Tours of Westwood and Pasadena. Our LA Stylist is talking about goody two shoes in this week’s LA Style Stories. The “We Are Here: A Celebration of Legacy” is a first and the “Making Memories Festival” is a celebration of LA Food and Music. Art is alive and well at the “Brewery Artwalk”. There are plenty of lovely ways to ring in November, Tomatoes.
November 5. Farm Day
Tomorrow is “Ventura County Farm Day” and you might still be able to get tickets. It’s definitely worth changing your plans for. Farm Day is full of free agricultural tours and activities hosted at 15? different farms, ranches and agricultural organizations across Ventura County. Mr. Tomato and I attended last year visiting 4 farms and we adored it! Meeting the people that feed us and seeing their agricultural digs was fascinating, educational and inspiring, Tomatoes.
It’s all about having fun, exploring the community food system, and learning about Ventura County’s rich agricultural heritage. The tours are self-guided. You travel in your own car, at your own pace, visiting the locations most interesting to you. Definitely perfect for a beautiful and rewarding day trip, Gals!
Diet Nazis
Yes, indeed, I’m always riddled with guilt after I’ve gorged myself on a slice of double chocolate cake or imbibed a salty Margarita. Lady Penelope bemoans the ever-changing rules of diet and nutrition and calls those who insist on their program, “Diet Nazis.”. Watch the video.
November 4-6. Dia De Los Muertos
Día de los Muertos Celebrations have been taking place all across town but there are 2 more left that might interest you. Barnsdall Park has a “Día de los Muertos Installation and Celebration” November 4th and 5th and the Canoga Park Youth Arts Center presents its “Día de los Muertos Exhibition” on November 6.
Barnsdall Arts Center, Junior Arts Center, and LA Municipal Art Gallery co-present their Annual Día de los Muertos Installation and Celebration in Barnsdall Park. On view at the Gallery on Nov. 4 and 5. The Canoga Park Youth Arts Center presents its Día de Los Muertos Art Exhibition on Sun., Nov. 6 from 10am to 4pm. See over 400 artworks, including altars and decorated Calaveras created by students from local schools and the Center’s after-school classes and a free drop-in tin calavera art workshop, all taking place just down the street from Main Street Canoga Park’s celebration.

Picasso Exhibits
How many cities can say they have two incredible Picasso Exhibits being offered at two different museums at the same time? None. But LA is always exemplary when it comes to art. “Picasso Cut Papers” at the Hammer, features some of the artist’s most whimsical works and “Picasso Ingres: Face to Face” at Norton Simon brings together two extraordinary masterpieces for the first time. Ain’t LA grand, Tomatoes?!
The new exhibition, Picasso Cut Papers, is devoted to a little known yet foundational aspect of Pablo Picasso’s artistic practice and spans the artist’s full career. It is a unique opportunity to see this facet of his work. The special installation, Picasso Ingres Face to Face, explores Picasso’s long-standing fascination with Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres’s “Madame Moitessier” (1856), and the generative process that resulted from his confrontation with that celebrated work of art, “Woman with a Book”. Now, 101 years after Picasso’s initial encounter with “Madame Moitessier,” visitors can gaze upon these two stunning paintings side by side. Beware…your jaw might just drop upon viewing.
November 12. We ARe Here
The Music Center presents the first-of-its-kind free public event “We ARe Here: A Celebration of Legacy” in commemoration of Black, Brown and Indigenous Communities and individuals who have contributed to LA’s rich diversity. You know it will be fab, Tomatoes, because The Music Center is at the helm.
The Music Center, in collaboration with For Freedoms https://forfreedoms.org/ and Kinfolk https://www.shakers.tech/kinfolk , have found a new and exciting way to memorialize our unsung heroes and broaden our understanding of L.A. ancestral history. Those 3 unsung Los Angeles heroes include the amazing Biddy Mason, Bea Alva and Gaspar Yanga. You can also enjoy spoken word performances, artmaking, food and live music. Be sure and mark this in your calendar!
November 10-13. Preservation Pasadena: Craftsman to Modern Tour
Join “Preservation Pasadena: Craftsman to Modern” for this year’s fall education event. It’s a 3-day celebration of preservation, history, culture and architecture including lectures, panel discussions, self-guided tours, conversations with artists and collectors and more! Celebrate great architecture in and around Pasadena, Ladies.
The city of Pasadena is home to some of the most notable examples of architect-designed properties from Craftsman style to Mid-Century and everything in between. During this celebration, you can explore architectural style and design over five decades and learn the connections and differences that illustrate how architecture changed through time. You gotta love that kind of history.
November 12 & 13. All Roads Lead to Westwood
All roads will lead to Westwood for the L.A. Conservancy’s 2022 Fall Tour…“All Roads Lead to Westwood.” See Westwood history come to life as you explore Spanish revival-style architecture, learn about historic movie theatres, and pay a visit to some of the most iconic buildings at the sprawling UCLA campus. I’ve no doubt it will be an eye-opening tour, Tomatoes.
Explore Westwood’s complex and layered history and see first-hand how this intentionally planned neighborhood, built in 1929, has influenced and been influenced by the developments around it. If you’ve ever wondered about UCLA’s college town, this tour will answer your questions.
November 13. Making Memories Festival
Did you know that November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month, Gals? “The Making Memories Festival” was created last year to honor and celebrate Alzheimer’s LA’s 40 years of service to the Los Angeles community. When my Mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s they were there with free educational seminars at my Mother’s Memory Care Center. That helped bring me a deeper understanding of the condition. So please check out this important organization and their multicultural event at LA State Historic Park. Tomatoes. Alzheimer’s LA definitely deserves to be celebrated this month for all the incredible work they do. This year’s event will feature Grammy Award-winners Los Lobos as the headlining act, along with other local bands and a variety of food trucks, games and activities and retail and informational booths focusing on brain health and other healthy lifestyle opportunities. November 5 & 6. Brewery Artwalk
The Brewery Artwalk is an event for anyone and everyone who loves art in all its forms and who wants to learn about the history of the community or discover how art, science and technology are linked. In addition to over 100 artist studios who are opening for the event, visitors will enjoy a variety of food trucks and a beer garden operated by The Brewery’s on-site restaurant, Barbara’s at the Brewery. |
