NYC Life: Special Invites, Juneteenth, Shakespeare in NYC, Theatre in London, and More

I love New York in June (and every month.) We have two special invites from two of our favorite Tomatoes. There are many Juneteenth celebrations this month. It’s also Pride Month and there’s a backyard sale you don’t want to miss. Shakespeare is back in Central Park. On the other side of the pond, If you’re planning a trip to London, check out the latest London theatre shows courtesy of Sandi Durell’s Theater Pizzazz. Valerie Smaldone has the scoop on a juicy show biz story.  And of course, we wish all the great dad’s out there a wonderful Father’s Day!!!

June 17. Soul of the City: Juneteenth with Queen Esther

Head to the Museum of the City of New York today at 2 PM, and celebrate Juneteenth with a live performance by songwriter, musician, and storyteller Queen Esther.  Special introduction by Harlem style intellectual Lana Turner. Described by Vanity Fair as “…a brutal, original, explosive singer…” and Feedback as “…the unknown queen of Americana”, Queen Esther will perform selections from her substantial body of alt-country, jazz, Black Americana to fearlessly subvert all-too-common historical narratives, revealing the powerfully triumphant resolve of Black folk in the 19th century. Get the details.

And check out more Juneteenth celebrations.

June 8- Aug. 6. HAMLET in the Park

Returning once again to Free Shakespeare in the Park, director Kenny Leon commands The Delacorte stage with a nine-week, tour-de-force production of the Bard’s masterpiece, HAMLET, a riveting, contemporary present-day take on Shakespeare’s classic tale of family and betrayal, as enduring as the stars above Central Park.

“Hamlet is arguably the greatest play in the Western canon, and I am thrilled that Kenny Leon will be helming this summer’s production. As he demonstrated with his brilliant production of Much Ado About Nothing, Kenny has an expert way of making Shakespeare come alive in a contemporary American context, illuminating these great works while also reimagining them for our times and our country,” said Public Theater Artistic Director Oskar Eustis. “Hamlet will be a beautiful salute to the city as we head into a season where we will be renewing and renovating our beautiful home, The Delacorte Theater.”
