Delmonico’s to Reopen in September
6SqFt reports that one of our iconic restaurants, that closed during the pandemic is set to reopen this fall. Originally opened in 1927 by brothers Giovanni and Pietro Delmonico as a pastry shop on William Street, the restaurant moved to Beaver Street a decade later. Widely considered the first fine dining restaurant in the country, Delmonico’s offered a luxurious dining experience unknown to diners at the time.
In addition to being famous for its steak, Delmonico’s is reportedly the birthplace of Eggs Benedict, Baked Alaska, Lobster Newburg, and Chicken A la Keene. The eatery was also the first to serve women who were unaccompanied by men, which was prohibited at the time, as 6sqft previously reported.
The restaurant, which is officially reopening on September 15, will offer five private dining areas with enough seating for 500 people. GET ALL THE DETAILS HERE.
Roving at the Karl Lagerfeld Exhibit
Our roving photographer, Nicole Freezer Rubens, writes:
For those of you who did not get to see Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty at the Met before it closed last week, I offer a close up look at some of the fine Chanel pieces exhibited.
Karl Lagerfeld, a German genius fashion designer who lived from 1923-2019, has become a controversial figure, based on his bigoted anti-feminist, anti-semitic, and anti-immigrant commentary. I tried to put that aside as I viewed the highlights of his life’s work. Sometimes it’s harder than others to separate the masterpieces from the person. Perhaps that is why I waited until the last minute to finally see the show.
Regardless of my opinion the couture clothing was spectacular. The minutia of lace, line, button choice and placement, texture, sequins, rosettes and embellishment is undoubtedly worthy of recognition. It is clear to me how Lagerfeld’s work will remain iconic, and for that I am grateful.

Now to Aug. 27. Van Gogh’s Cypresses at the Met
Van Gogh’s Cypresses is the first exhibition to focus on the trees—among the most famous in the history of art—immortalized in signature images by Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890). Such iconic pictures as Wheat Field with Cypresses and The Starry Night take their place as the centerpiece in a presentation that affords an unprecedented perspective on a motif virtually synonymous with the Dutch artist’s fiercely original power of expression. Some 40 works illuminate the extent of his fascination with the region’s distinctive flamelike evergreens as they successively sparked, fueled, and stoked his imagination over the course of two years in the South of France: from his initial sightings of the “tall and dark” trees in Arles to realizing their full, evocative potential (“as I see them”) at the asylum in Saint-Rémy.
