Heading South for the weekend
It’s astonishing to me how many people have moved away from New York to destinations elsewhere. How many of us know people who have moved to Arizona, California, Nevada, North Carolina, and of course, what has become New York South….Florida. Numerous friends, business contacts and acquaintances have pulled up stakes and settled in the Sunshine State. So, when your dear friend relocates there and it’s a big birthday for her, of course, you make sure to visit.
Florida in August is not the most pleasant place to be, but hey, you only turn a certain age once! With that in mind, I made it my business to research a restaurant near her home that serves local fish and seafood in an imaginative way.
In the Boynton Beach area, I came across Prime Catch.
Situated on the water, this beautifully decorated popular restaurant was the perfect place for a celebratory dinner.
Starting with spicy margaritas made with a dash of fresh watermelon, and a salad crafted with baby gem lettuce, grapes, blue cheese, candied walnuts, and champagne vinaigrette, along with fresh baked bread and whipped butter, I was already, (pardon the expression at a seafood restaurant), hooked.
My darling birthday girlfriend ordered crispy Thai Shrimp and she was so very happy. Rounding out the table, the husbands consumed a Caesar Salad and a tasty flatbread.
Then the mains came. So much inventive food to consider!
As we were in Florida, I wanted to stay super local, and had plenty to choose from. Listen to this line-up: Coconut Crusted Halibut with a mango sweet and sour sauce, Asian Pear slaw and jasmine rice,
Honey Almond Roasted Snapper, with an orange beurre blanc, crispy smashed fingerling potatoes and grilled asparagus, Pecan Grouper with sauteed baby spinach, sherry brown butter and crispy parsnips, and Seared Local Mahi with coconut, shrimp Jasmine rice and Thai cabbage slaw. Each dish was absolutely sublime.
Now back in New York, food lover that I am, I am still remembering the fresh and interesting dishes, overlooking the water in a beautiful setting, and thinking…you know, maybe Florida in August is not that bad, after all.
