Sept.6-20. The Elephants Are Here
The Great Elephant Migration exhibit is a captivating public art installation in New York City’s Meatpacking District. This exhibit features 100 life-sized Indian elephant sculptures spread across the district, each intricately crafted by indigenous artisans from India’s Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
These sculptures are made from Lantana camara, an invasive plant species, and highlight the artisans’ deep connection with the elephants they live alongside. The exhibit aims to promote human-wildlife coexistence and conservation, making it one of the largest public art installations in NYC since Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s The Gates in 2005. The exhibit is not only visually stunning but also carries a powerful message about the importance of biodiversity and the harmonious coexistence of humans and wildlife. It’s a must-see if you’re in the area!
Sept. 15. House on Fire at the Green Room 42
Playwright, lyricist, and actress Gretchen Cryer and her granddaughter, Gracie Hyland are writing a new musical together, “House on Fire,” and they have put together a concert version for one night at the Green Room 42. The show is a cautionary fairy tale – absurdist, surreal, funny and deadly serious. Thirteen-year-old Sophia is facing an early teenage crisis. She knows the planet is in trouble and that her handsome charismatic father is a big part of the problem: he owns the biggest fossil fuel company in the whole world! So how is she going to save the planet without losing his love?
Special guests Kenita Miller, Michael McCorry Rose, Tyley Ross, and Gabriella Joy Rodriguez and Music Direction by Jody Shelton.

Now that summer is unofficially over, September on Long Island ushers in a gentle transition from hot summer days to crispy and cooler weather. Andrea Peponakis reports that Long Island’s entertainment scene is heating up with indoor events. Local theaters, performing arts centers, malls, and concert halls offer an enticing lineup of live performances and films, providing the perfect entertainment for September’s breezy evenings.

October 16. Carol Sue Gershman at 54 Below
One of our favorite Tomatoes, Carol Sue Gershman makes her 54 Below debut at age 89 in a unique show combining the release of her new book, “You are only ?? Years Young!” followed by love songs tied irrevocably to her life story. She will share her tricks on how to stay vibrant and give the audience an honest and simple approach to what is important to stay well-maintained through the years. Then, joined by a three-piece band, she will sing love songs from the American Songbook including “Nearness of You,” “Bewitched,” “I Love Paris,” and many more.
This will be an enlightening and fun-filled evening sure to keep you dancing on the sunny side of the street, smiling, and informed. Her book is included in the ticket price.

Roving at the State Fair
Our roving photographer, Nicole Freezer Rubens says:
The sun definitely sets on the summer season when the Angus and the Holstein cows travel to their local state fairs. To kick off Labor Day weekend I visited the New York State Fair upstate in Syracuse. Visitors under the age of 12 and over 65 are granted free admission, making the festivities more accessible to the people.
Since 1841 the New York State Fair has grown with a current attendance of over a million visitors. This 13 day extravaganza offers attractions for everyone, including agricultural displays and contests, amusement park rides and games, a variety of foods and concerts, featuring past star performances by Bruno Mars, and Lady A. The exhibits aim to educate and unite. Butter sculptures, a cattle barn, health and safety demonstrations, crafts, a poultry pavilion, horticulture and loads of blue ribbons abound.
The vibe is a thick slice of Americana, and always reminds me of the simpler parts of life that we all share, often without realizing how our nation’s reliance on farming and agriculture is a basic foundation of our everyday existence, connecting our nation. It is timely that these festivals coincide with Labor Day, highlighting some of the social and economic achievements of our American workers who keep our country operational and thriving. This realization is truly what is at the heart of the fair, and a great reminder of a unifying commonality that still connects our currently divided country.
