Miami Life: The Beautiful People, The Lunch Club, Special Invite, and the Book Fair

If you want to be part of the Miami elite, join The Club at Moore. We were recently invited by friends where we got to ogle the “beautiful people.” I am sharing the member application but warning… it could cause fainting.  I was excited though to be asked to join The Lunch Club at the Bass Museum. They’re a great group of women and the museum always has interesting avant-garde art exhibits.  Join me at Books & Books and meet my friend Veronica Riedel, an artist, screenwriter, director, photographer, and producer who will be discussing her new book. And Miami’s Book Fair is just around the corner. I’m making a list of the authors I want to meet.

We Want Moore

One of the most exclusive places to dine in Miami is not available to most residents.   Nor is it available to most tourists who would love to be a part of the Miami elite every night for dinner. You have to be a member of The Club at The Moore in Miami’s Design District to see what all the excitement is about. It’s pricey but if you want to be perceived as one of the “beautiful people” this is the way to go. Everyone you bring there will be very impressed. You will see all of the greatest fashions and accessories. This is definitely the place to find out what’s “in” and “out.”

Here is the Moore Miami’s “Become a Member” page. Invites only. That’s the two tricky words that make it even more exclusive. They claim you need to be referred by an existing member, but I don’t even know if that’s true. Here is the application and fee structure. Faint on your own time. https://search.app/heu1J1uy85ysgdbq9

Eliot and I were lucky to be invited to the club by friends, Francesca and David Nabors. They invited us and Francesca’s parents, Diana and Larry Levy. It was kind of take the elders out so they can see what they are missing.  We did see what we were missing but the truth is at our age we would never go there enough to warrant the expense. Diana and Larry are much younger than us but they like to go home at the end of their work day and write, read, and rest.

I’m happy to say we all felt the magic of the place and for a few hours we thought we were in our 30s. It worked until we saw ourselves in one of the many windows.  Reality set in.

The Club at The Moore is 20,000 square feet, with several chef-driven restaurants, multiple bars and lounges, hotel rooms, private dining rooms, and event and workspaces. David, who just became a Supreme Court lawyer, (bravo!) uses the roomy workstations quite often.

The building is one of the most recognizable properties in Miami, The Moore was built by renowned architect, entrepreneur, and financier David P. Davis during the 1920s Florida Land Boom. Set on a former pineapple plantation, the Neoclassical-style building served as a furniture showroom and warehouse for Moore and Sons. Its presence would influence the development and design of the surrounding area for 100 years to come.

The Lunch Club at the Bass Museum

If you ever find yourself in Miami, let me take you to the Bass Museum. I will get a special docent to take us around and show you a lineup of some of the most fun exhibits you have ever seen.

Eliot and I used to go to the Bass years ago, but we found it a little stuffy. Boy has that changed. Each exhibit is very avant garde and the story behind each one is fascinating.  Trust me, you won’t fall asleep. In fact, you will feel more energized to seek out more fun times in your life. Just look at some of the photos. You can see a group of women who were grateful for an afternoon of the good side of life. Everyone needs an escape.

I got very lucky. Several friends invited me to join The Lunch Club at the Bass Museum.  I didn’t know what to expect because I was concerned about high-brow discussions that would bore me. It was just the opposite. It was all human nature talk and life observations. Art inspires profound thoughts.

Thank you, Alison Davis, Cynthia O’Keefe-Sorpresi, and Adriana Vergara for inviting me. Can’t wait to hear about future activities. Loved meeting a great group of women. Of course. I had to stop at the gift shop to celebrate my fun day. $500 later, I felt very fulfilled.

Nov. 16.  A Personal Invitation to Meet My Friend Veronica Riedel

Veronica will be discussing her new book, “All the Worlds That Are in This One,” at Books & Books in Coral Gables. The book showcases 15 years of her artwork, edited by curators Felix Suazo and Adrian Herrera. She recently won the Kárstica Residency in Cañada del Hoyo, Spain. Veronica, an artist, screenwriter, director, photographer, and producer, has been a friend of mine for years. We always keep in touch because we have so many of the same interests.

Veronica lives between Guatemala, (where she was born), Miami, and Madrid. She is currently developing innovative artwork with biomaterials and artificial intelligence.

Her artworks have won several awards in biennials and have been exhibited in museums, galleries, and international art fairs. They are part of significant private and public collections in Latin America, Europe, and the United States.

Saturday, November 16th, 5 PM | Books & Books, Coral Gables. Get the details.

Nov 22-16. Your Guide to The Miami Book Fair

It’s finally here. Now everyone who loves to read in Miami has a complete list of every non-fiction author and book that will be featured at the Book Fair. I really want to keep myself organized this year. There are so many authors I want to see in person and perhaps ask a question I have been curious about.

For example, Kara Swisher, author of Burn Book, really revealed a lot of ugly stuff about some of the tech leaders. I want to know which tech executives got angry with her and who remained good friends. I am sure there is a lot of material that most people don’t know about. Kara doesn’t mind sharing what she knows.

Then, of course, it would be fun to find out the behind-the-scenes at Twitter. Author Ben Mezrich will tell us the latest on the livelihood of X, formerly Twitter. A lot of folks are switching to Threads, a Facebook-owned thought-provoking platform where everyone expresses their own opinions.

There are a lot of great authors who are being featured this year. I’m looking through the lists and marking their appearances in my calendar. Love getting organized.
