LA Life: Mildred’s Garden, Lunchtime Meetups, Shake Shack, Arbor Day & St. Paddy’s Fun
According to Ladies Maid Dorthea Hinkleberry, Lady Deborah Lee Zipp of Chatsworth Devonshire is heartbroken due to the final final final forever farewell of ‘Downton Abbey”. However, her ladyship is stepping out of her confinement to honor her LA tomatoes with updates for this week’s LA Life newsletter. Stiff upper lip Ladies! This Tuesday, Grand Park LA is launching “Lunchtime Meetups” which is one creative facet of their “Springtime Reads” program. Lady Deborah shares a few favorites of St. Patty’s day celebrations. A museum of a different kind can be found at the UCLA Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden that is a delightful retreat for “LA Ladies”. You can celebrate Arbor Day tomorrow with City Plants. And the East Coast is coming to the West Coast with the first “Shake Shack” for burger lovin’ tomatoes. Tallyho!
March 15 – May 10th Lunchtime Writer’s Meetup
Springtime is a great season to indulge your passion for the written word and Grand Park LA has launched a brand new program to celebrate reading and literacy. Every Tuesday, in the serene and beautiful setting of the LA Civic Center, Grand Park is offering a break during lunch (noon-1:30pm) with a good dose of creativity and a wonderful selection of food trucks. No experience necessary…all levels of reading and literary proficiency welcome tomatoes. Just bring your desire to read and write.
Meet at the Performance Lawn where an instructor will be giving writing exercises. You can also bring your own projects to work on tomatoes. A great opportunity from the novice to published authors to explore their skills.
UCLA Mildred E Mathias Botanical Garden
The Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden, a “living museum” and a 7-acre public garden on the UCLA campus, is open and free to the public tomatoes. Approximately 5000 species in 225 families, including many tropical and subtropical plants, reside in what is considered one of the most important botanical collections in the US. Wow! News to me ladies and who is Mildred E. Mathias? Well, an inspirational and super duper tomato that’s what!
Mildred was an extraordinary “herbarium botanist” (google it) and a definitive trail blazer. In 1947, Mildred started working at UCLA and in 1956, Mildred was appointed director of the garden and remained so until 1974. But she didn’t stop there. The list of her awesome achievements and awards is as long as an arm and she left an incredible legacy. Her contributions to the UCLA Botanical Garden and to the world of horticulture were honored in 1979 by giving this special garden her name. If you’d like to know more about this fantastic tomato check out the film, “Mildred Mathias, A Lifetime of Memories”. She is worthy of our esteem, ladies.
March 12. California Arbor Day
There just couldn’t be a better way to celebrate Arbor Day in Los Angeles than with the 2016 California Arbor Day Celebration with the Mayor and City Plants at Loren Miller Elementary School. Tomato volunteers do come prepared to sweat and get your hands dirty. After the planting, you’ll be treated to an old fashioned fun block party. How great is that tomatoes? Plus, FREE fruit and shade trees will be handed out on a first come first serve basis.
Shake Shack Opens March 15.
Watch out “In and Out Burger”, a new competitor from NYC is in town. Burger lovin’ tomatoes and NY transplants will be tickled pink to know the very first LA “Shake Shack” is opening March 15th in West Hollywood. This ever so popular and famous burger joint has even invented a new burger, unique to California, called the “Roadside Double”. No drooling ladies…please!
Shake Shack is a critically acclaimed, modern day “roadside” burger stand known for its 100% all-natural, antibiotic-free Angus beef burgers (no hormones added ever), griddled-crisp flat-top dogs, fresh-made frozen custard, crinkle cut fries, beer and wine, and more. Says, Randy Garutti, Shake Shack CEO, “Los Angeles is one of the greatest cities in the world with a culture like no other, and we look forward to being a part of the community.”
March 17. St. Patrick’s Day
On the day when every tomato and bloke is Irish, you won’t be able to turn a corner where there isn’t a celebration. But four FREE celebrations caught my eye, where you can tap your toes, dance to a jig, croon a tune, eat, drink and be merry.
Sunday March 13 at The St. Paddy’s Day Celebration in Pasadena and on Thursday March 17; The lunchtime St. Patrick’s Day concert at Pershing Square DTLA, the all-day celebration at The LA Farmers Market, AND the ShamROCK Silent Disco at The Village in Woodland Hills.
