Miami: A Winter Escape
Editor’s Note: Anne Akers, our health & beauty editor, will be reporting in from Miami on fun things to do whether you are visiting or live in the area. The Miami Life highlights will be featured in our NYC Newsletters and highlighted in our weekly 12 Favorite Things. If you are interested in signing up for a future dedicated Miami Life newsletter, please click here and we will notify you when it launches.
As Greater Miami welcomes a record breaking 23 million visitors, and overall tourism is up 4.1% from 2018, including more than 1 in 10 visitors traveling to this destination for a cruise, it is no wonder that we at the Three Tomatoes, decided to check it out!
Since “someone has to do it”, I am the chosen one, and now thoroughly enjoying a one-year hiatus between NYC and Miami’s Coconut Grove, where I will be reporting to you on Miami happenings, with an emphasis on the Winter months.
As many of you know, Miami is a virtual paradise of oceanfront cities, urban hubs and charming villages that includes Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, South Beach, and the districts of Wynwood, downtown Miami and Brickell, Little Havana and others.
However, did you also know that MIA airport, one of the busiest in the world, serves 150 worldwide destinations with 80 airlines…employment growth has exceeded national growth the last 5 years…and population growth is up 10% in the last decade, with a diverse population of 2.75 million, and a median age of 40? Further, with all the good-looking people “hitting the scene” here, is it no surprise that Miami was also picked as one of the vainest cities in North America (along with NYC, Phoenix and Charlotte).
From Art Basel to The South Beach Food and Wine Festival: so many
If you are looking for a winter escape, Winter in Miami is
calling! While much of the country is blanketed in snow… and winter
doldrums, the Flu season, and even SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) pull many
of us down, Miami is just a few hours away.
From January through March, calendar offerings include:
- The International Boat Show
- South Beach Wine and Food Festival
- The Coconut Grove Art Festival
- The Super Bowl
- U.S. Sailings World Cup Tour
- The Pegasus World Cup
For those in a more “holistic” frame of mind, how about Florida’s largest
Yoga festival OR Luminosa, a Zen Buddhist tradition of beautifully handcrafted silk lanterns, illuminating Miami’s Jungle Island? And for the more hedonistic, eat an absurdly large amount of chocolate at the annual International Chocolate Weekend, or taste more than 1000 wines (really!) at Miami’s “One Thousand Bottles: Sipping through America”.
YES! So the fun ahead is to cover as many of these events as I can, including the inside scoop and reviews.
And let’s think SUNSHINE and a very Happy 2020!
