In the Press Room at the Tony Awards
Was this the best Tony Awards show in a long time? YES! Ratings were sensational.
James Corden, as host, played all major Broadway musical roles in an opening number that got a lot of audience laughs and, I’m sure, a lot of smiles from the millions of TV viewers. I guess he could have starred in all of them. “I could play any role I want, and no one could stop me!”
Outside the Beacon Theater fans saw Andrew Lloyd Webber on tambourine, Steve Martin on guitar, Edie Brickell singing – and just about every Tony nominee and cast members doing a song. The show outside was a definite hit!
There were heartfelt words from Frank Langella in his acceptance speech talking about the terrorist attack in Orlando, Fla. and references to his connection to his role in The Father.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is going down in history, as we speak, with a show that has taken 11 Tony Awards, with producer plans to open many more productions in the near and far future. Hamilton has created an extraordinary buzz that is well deserved! But watch for that $10 lottery ticket and keep trying. The thought of a now $849 premium ticket price . . . well, that doesn’t quite work with the typical family.
Renee Elise Goldsberry (Hamilton) was excited and just wants to live up to that Tony Award . . . no problem there!
Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) says kids are finding themselves watching the show. He speaks lovingly about aspiring to be like his father. In fact, he dressed for the occasion in an outfit his father would have worn years ago at his age.
The Best Play went to The Humans (4 out of 6 Awards), with Jayne Houdyshell winning Best Featured Actress in a Play and Reed Birney as Best Featured Actor in a Play.
