LA Life: The Summer Event Guide
As I will be taking a summer break to live a bit more of LA Life, I thought “El Porto Dawn”, from LA Life Photographer Lorraine Devon Wilke, is the perfect photo and story to leave you with till September. Tasting Tomato Molly Cheek, LA Life Fashion Stylist Felicia Arlin, LA Life Poetess Lady Penelope and LA Life Guest Artist Corner with Artist Annie Wood are all back with their amazing columns and contributions. I have a list of events and happenings that I’ve highlighted that will hopefully serve as your summer resource guide. Have a fantabulous summer, Tomatoes.
El Porto Dawn: Cover Photo & Story
I am always drawn and partial to photos of the Pacific Ocean and its beaches but “El Porto Dawn”, from LA Life Photographer Lorraine Devon Wilke, is unique in that it is a reminder that our ocean is still a glorious site even to next industry. The photo and story illuminate, in a way that only Lorraine can depict, the marriage of beauty and grit. Be sure to check out Lorraine Devon Wilke’s marvelous photos on her webpage and browse her entire website as it reveals the vast tapestry of Lorraine’s amazing talent.
I remember the first time I gazed out over the ocean in the South Bay area of Los Angeles and realized that nature and industry mixed here in unique fashion. As you drive south from Playa del Rey (just south of the Marina del Rey jetty), the stunning coastline is dotted with a staggering number of some of the most major industrial complexes in the city. Starting from the northernmost point, there’s LAX (built in 1928); next is the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant (1894), then Scattergood Generating Station (1957), followed by the El Segundo Power Plant (1954), and, lastly, the gargantuan El Segundo Chevron Refinery (1911), which stretches over 1000 acres from El Segundo into Manhattan Beach. It’s a strange marriage of natural beauty on one side of the road, with the grit and grind of metal, oil, and steam on the other, all built decades before beachfront property became the most valuable commodity in real estate. But somehow beauty and the beasts of industry co-exist, largely without incident. There have been occasional spills of various materials from time-to-time, but the titans of industry cherish that beautiful coastline as much as beachgoers and property owners, so responsible caretaking is paramount, an unlikely symbiosis that generates some fascinating visual tableaus… like this image, “El Porto Dawn,” which captures the morning sun warming the horizon as a plane ascends from LAX, and tankers unload their supply to the refinery. Peace co-existence.
Guest Artist Corner: Art by Annie Wood
This week our esteemed guest artist, Annie Wood, just finished a new piece, “Note 2 – Remember Rest” that I chose to share with you, Tomatoes. I find it both soothing and energizing. Perhaps it is the magical quality and variety of dreamy rich whimsical colors that Annie chose to incorporate? Or the way she portrays intriguing woman or that it gives a reminder to take a break in such a clever way. I’m not an art expert but I know what I like, and I adore “Note 2 – Remember Rest”.
“Note 2 – Remember Rest” was inspired by a dream Annie had where a woman whispered in her ear, “Rest.” The bluebird holds a tiny envelope with a note that reads, “Remember rest.” 24×34 mixed media oil painting features a unique blend of abstract and expressionistic styles, showcasing a mysterious figure with a touch of realism.
Vibrant blues, greens, and yellows dance across the canvas, creating a dreamlike atmosphere in “Note 2 – Remember Rest”. The subtle contours of the figure’s profile, the architectural elements, and the organic shapes come together to form a truly captivating composition.
The bird holds an envelope with a special message inside: “remember rest.” It’s a gentle reminder to pause, take a breath, and remember art, beauty and rest.
Annie Wood is an internationally exhibited mixed-media artist living in her hometown of Hollywood, California so as an LA native she is Super LA. Annie Wood is interested in reexperiencing her dreams by painting them, daydreaming new ones, finding order in chaos and chaos in order, seeing familiar things in new ways, and creating visual stories that make people feel peaceful, make them wonder, remember, and pause. You can see all her creations Annie’s online art gallery and you can also subscribe to her free newsletter How to Love the World.
