Love Detective Shows? Here Are 3 From Across the Pond
We just finished watching the 8 episodes of the Netflix series Marcella, a British crime noir detective series produced. Marcella is a former London detective who is devastated when her husband leaves her and their two children. When Marcella is visited by a senior detective on the murder squad seeking information regarding an unsolved, 11-year-old case of a serial killer who seems to have become active again, Marcella returns to the murder squad. She enters a world of online dating, prostitution, and the dubious dealings of her husband’s employers while trying to save her marriage. This is a very multilayered series, with lots of twists and turns. Marcella’s character is multilayered as well and when the series 1 ends, you will be anxiously awaiting the return of season 2!
The 9th season of Foyle’s War just aired this spring on PBS. But you can catch all the past seasons on Netflix. The The Wall Street Journal describes the series as “a triumph from start to finish.” Set along the South Coast of England in the 1940s, Foyle’s War stars Michael Kitchen as Christopher Foyle, the straightforward sleuth who fights his own battles on the home front while war rages across Europe — that is, until now. We love everything about this show – the stories, the clothes, the cars, and you’ll fall in love with the series regulars.
Endeavor (another PBS series) is a prequel to the long running PBS detective series Inspector Morse and, like that series, is set primarily in Oxford. Shaun Evans portrays a young Endeavour Morse beginning his career as a Detective Constable with the Oxford City Police CID. Set in the 1960s, a crime is solved in each episode. We love Shuan Evans, the baby-faced intense detective. And as in Foil’s War, these show also captures the early 60s vibe – clothes and cars – perfectly too.
