Miami Life: Chocolate, Wellness, Kabbalah, Miami Exclusive!

I have some great news for chocolate lovers. Bad news for people who want to lose weight. It’s chocolate time in Miami. The Ultimate Wellness Retreat is happening in our own backyard at the Faena Hotel at the end of the month. Miami has a 10-week course on Kabbalah starting soon. If Madonna swears by it, maybe we should all consider Kabbalah. This is a Miami Exclusive: PortMiami welcomes “Icon of the Seas,” the world’s largest cruise ship, and my husband Eliot got the photos!

A Festival of Chocolate

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden of Coral Gables is once again turning its 83 acres into a Festival of Chocolates from Saturday and Sunday, January 20 & 21, 2024. 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. This means that those of us who dare to participate in the Festival Of Chocolates will be tasting chocolate confections, decadent desserts, and savory bites until our tummies start to hurt.

Fairchild Garden is promoting the event by telling everyone in the Miami area that they should “Experience a weekend filled with all things chocolate that will delight your palate and remind you of the bounty from the tropics. We’ll have cacao trees available for purchase for your home garden.”

Here is what you can expect:

  • Enjoy chocolate tastings, cooking demos, and chocolate-inspired activities and classes.
  • Enjoy chocolate pairings, chocolate-themed drink specialty flights and tastings, and a variety of chocolate infused foods all aimed at unlocking flavors
  • Visit chocolate and artisanal vendors!
  • Shop cacao trees for your home garden all weekend long as well as ‘chocolate scented’ orchids
  • Listen to live music
  • Watch little ones ride the Chocolate Express!
  • Enjoy spectacular butterflies at Wings of the Tropics, our exotic butterfly exhibit
  • Sit in the shade and watch little ones run, play and explore at The Children’s Garden
  • Cool down in the misty cloud forest and National Orchid Garden in the only tropical rainforest in the continental U.S.
  • And so much more!

Fairchild asks, “Did you know that chocolate is made from the fruit of the Theobroma cacao tree? Often described as the “Food of the Gods,” cacao is a tropical rainforest understory plant. You can see cacao trees growing in our Rainforest; you may even see some fruit ready for harvesting!”

PortMiami Welcomes “Icon of the Seas,” World’s Largest Cruise Ship

Photos by Eliot Hess

I don’t care if you like big cruise ships, or small boats. It was absolutely thrilling to witness the Icon of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship, arrive at the Miami port. The ocean liner belongs to the Royal Caribbean Group.

Everyone living around Miami’s government cut heard celebration noises early Wednesday morning as the ocean liner was cruising in. Most of the 5,610 guests were on several decks singing songs and dancing to rather loud Broadway music tunes.

There are 2,805 cabins and 2,350 crew members. It’s a 1,198 foot ship. Those on board will be able to enjoy a host of exciting features, including eight neighborhoods and 40 or so different bars and dining options.

Icon of the Seas’ maiden voyage from PortMiami is set for January 27th. It will offer year-round Eastern or Western Caribbean adventures to St. Maarten, Mexico, St. Thomas, and Royal Caribbean’s private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas. That’s a mouthful. GET ALL THE DETAILS.
