Miami Life: Film Festival, Outdoor Dining, Drone Art. Women Power
The magnificent and historic Olympia Theater will be the venue for the opening and closing night films of the Miami Film Festival. If you are planning on visiting Miami in March or anytime, make sure you take advantage of our weather and dine outside, especially on the water. Drone Art—that’s a thing now. And I have the scoop in a drone light show unlike any other. One way to celebrate Women’s History Month is by supporting female-owned businesses and artisans at the Perez Art Museum, PAMM Shop.
Here’s A Chance to See Miami’s Magnificent Olympia Theater
If you think Radio City is gorgeous, wait until you see the Olympia Theater in downtown Miami. It will be open next month for The Miami Film Festival. The historic venue will be screening the opening and closing night films, Meet the Barbarians and On Swift Horses.
The Olympia Theater opened in 1926 as a silent movie palace. The “talkies” and Vaudeville soon arrived at the Olympia, and for more than 40 years the theater was the number one entertainment center in Miami. It was one of the last theaters in the country to showcase Vaudeville acts. It was also the first air-conditioned building in the South. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places. Throughout its history, the Olympia has been host to the world’s most exciting performers in the arts and entertainment community. Cultural icons such as Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Luciano Pavarotti and Etta James have provided memorable evenings under the Olympia Theater’s stars. The theater has also hosted today’s best-known pop stars and is a favored venue for concerts.
The theater owes its distinctive character to architect John Eberson, the master of “atmospheric” theater design, and it is one of the few Eberson theaters around the world still standing. The most beloved cultural venue has retained its stature in a Downtown that continues its own transformation. High-rise office buildings and glittering luxury condominiums have replaced many of the theater’s aging neighbors. Downtown Miami is once again becoming a place to live, work, shop and play, and the Olympia Theater is at the heart of the action – just as it was in 1926.
“Bringing the Miami Film Festival back to the Olympia Theater feels like the perfect way to honor Miami’s rich cinematic and cultural heritage,” James Woolley, executive director of the Miami Film Festival, tells New Times. “There’s an undeniable magic to this space between its history, its beauty, and the way it transports audiences the moment they step inside. We can’t wait for filmmakers and audiences to experience the festival in such a legendary setting.”
If You Visit Miami in March, You Must Eat Outdoors
Let’s face it, you are in Miami because it’s cold where you live. I don’t understand how you would want to be anywhere else. We are living with constant warm weather, sun, beach, ocean, glorious pastel colors everywhere, the best restaurants, water recreation, culture and top entertainment.
Take advantage of what we have to offer. The one thing I insist on is dining outside. Please go to restaurants on the water, with a view and a menu filled with fresh fish and every type of shellfish, sushi counts. The one place I am going to suggest is The Rusty Pelican on Key Biscayne. It’s a true Miami experience because it’s on a large body of water, the views are north, east, south, and west. Every type of recreation boat, from yachts to jet skis, whiz by and you get to see all the bathing beauties on board.
It’s been around since 1972. The contemporary American menu features everything from fresh locally caught seafood, to refreshing signature cocktails, to perfectly cooked cuts of steak. You can join them for a fabulous brunch, a seaside luncheon, an intimate dinner, or an unbeatable happy hour.
Situated right on the Rickenbacker Marina, the plantation-style building exudes relaxation from every corner. You can dine inside or on the patio. I feel the patio will give you a true tropical experience and you will be entertained by live music.
We went to The Rusty Pelican last Sunday. It was jammed but the valet service had their act together. Everyone was accommodated pretty quickly. The service was excellent, the food was excellent and the crowd was lively. Many folks were wearing white, a sign that they were in the Miami Groove. Don’t miss out.
This Is Something You Have Never Seen Before
I can guarantee you have never attended a drone light show set to an intimate candlelit concert. I can also guarantee this will be the first of many now that the special events world has figured out how to do it. The drone show I plan to attend will feature the music of Vivaldi, Mussorgsky, & Tchaikovsky!
The event will take place at the Miramar Regional Park for two nights only, April 4 and 5th. It still amazes me how the Drone Art Show will be combining classical music with cutting-edge technology. You’ll be able to enjoy a string quartet’s rendition of iconic classical songs as drones create patterns and shapes in sync with the music. Let me explain:
A drone, also known as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), is an aircraft that can fly without a pilot on board. Drones can be controlled remotely or fly autonomously. The folks controlling the drones will be a distance away from the audience so don’t expect to see them.
The history of drones:
Drones have evolved from early military models to modern consumer-level devices. The earliest recorded use of an unmanned aerial vehicle for warfighting was in 1849.
- Military
Used for intelligence gathering, anti-aircraft target practice, and as weapons platforms - Civil
Used for photography, filming, delivering goods, monitoring climate change, and search operations after natural disasters - Inspections
Used to inspect large structures in areas where humans would not be able to operate - Agriculture
Used to monitor the environment of the field and enhance the quantity and quality of crops
Drones can be powered by an electric, jet, or combustion motor. They also have modern equipment such as GPS, radar control, infrared, and high-resolution cameras.
I suggest you get your tickets as soon as possible. https://thedroneartshow.com/miami/

Just so you know, the Women’s History Month is a dedicated month to reflect on the often-overlooked contributions of women to U.S. history. From Abigail Adams to Susan B. Anthony, Sojourner Truth to Rosa Parks, the timeline of women’s history milestones stretches back to the founding of the United States.
The actual celebration of Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa.
A few years later, the idea caught on within communities, school districts and organizations across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.
