Miami Life: NYE Miami Style, Let’s Tango, Symphony, Legos
First of all, Happy New Year to all The Three Tomatoes readers. I certainly hope 2024 is a healthy and happy one for all of you. I just finished reading “Can You See Us Now?” by Cheryl Benton, the head Tomato. I enjoyed every minute of it because it reinforced my belief that as women get older they have to make themselves more relevant and appreciated. And Miami sure knows how to do New Year’s Eve. I’m sharing some photos. I love this time of year in Miami., starting with Open Air Tango on Lincoln Road. We were recently gifted two tickets to Lincoln Road’s New World Symphony and I encourage everyone to make this a destination. LEGO® art exhibits are ageless and I’m thrilled that the “The Art of the Brick” LEGO® art exhibition, considered to be the best in the world, has finally arrived in Miami.
Happy New Year Miami Style
Over the holiday, I enjoyed every minute of reading Cheryl Benton’s novel, “Can You See Us Now?” because it reinforced my belief that as women get older, they have to make themselves more relevant and appreciated. I said it before I read Cheryl’s book, and I’ll keep saying it till every woman I know who is over 65, maintains an active life.
Too many older women just fade into the background. The Three Tomatoes newsletter is all about energizing mature women to live life to the fullest, I’m thrilled to be a part of this group of women.
Here are a few photos of the New Year’s Eve party I attended this year. The weather in Miami was great that night so we were able to spend it outdoors on a super-size balcony watching 17 different fireworks displays. What a joy! Come on down. This is paradise.
Open Air Tango on Lincoln Road
You have never seen anything so romantic. The first time I saw 12 couples dancing in a marked off area on Lincoln Road I was mesmerized. I sat to the side with many others watching the most seductive body motions I have ever witnessed on a dance floor.
I just wanted to dance like that myself. I was so envious. I was a great dancer for so many years when I was younger. Now I have to stand on the side watching others take center stage. I was determined to get in the groove.
That never happened. I spoke to a few of the dancers after their performance and they told me they have been studying for years to perfect their techniques. That never happens. If you are a professional tango dancer, you study and practice for the rest of your life. That was the end of my tango dancing desires.
Now, I just go to Lincoln Road once a month and watch the experts. I can’t believe my eyes. I go into a trance. The dancers are so precise. They look like robots who know every step like they have been programmed. Nothing is out of order. They are completely synchronized with their partners.

Lincoln Road’s New World Symphony
This is the start of something new for us. We were recently gifted two tickets to The New World Symphony and now I wonder why we don’t go there more often. It was so exciting to see so many young young folks dedicated to their love of music. This is a very unique place and I encourage every tourist in Miami to make The New World Symphony a must destination..
The America’s Orchestral Academy (NWS), prepares graduates of music programs for leadership roles in professional orchestras and ensembles. Since its co-founding in 1987 by Artistic Director Laureate Michael Tilson Thomas and Lin and Ted Arison, NWS has helped launch the careers of more than 1,150 alumni worldwide.
The programs that they hand out at each performance says it best. “The New World Symphony consists of young musicians who are granted fellowships lasting up to three years. The fellowship program offers in-depth exposure to traditional and modern repertoire, professional development training and personalized experiences working with leading guest conductors, soloists and visiting faculty. Relationships with these artists are extended through NWS’s extensive distance learning via the internet.
“NWS Fellows take advantage of the innovative performance facilities and state-of-the art practice and ensemble rooms of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center, the campus of the New World Symphony and home of the Knight New Media Center.
In the hopes of joining NWS, more than 1,500 recent music school and conservatory graduates compete for about 35 available fellowships each year. The Fellows are selected for this highly competitive, prestigious opportunity based on their musical achievement and promise, as well as their passion for the future of classical music.”
It so joyful to watch young folks fill the air with music that sounds just as good as Carnegie Hall. We started off our holiday celebrations with the “Sounds Of The Season” program. It included both Christmas and Chanukkah songs. It was such a pleasure to see how inclusive entertainers can be.
The conductor was young Molly Turner, a Chinese-conductor and composer and a first-year Fellow at the New World Symphony. She leads the orchestra in subscription, family, education, and holiday concerts. Recently, she has also conducted the Orchestre de Paris, Gstaad Festival Orchestra, Theater Orchestra Biel Solothurn, Juilliard Orchestra, Dallas Opera Orchestra, Primrose International Viola Competition, Colburn Orchestra, and Eastern Festival Orchestra.
She completed her master’s degree in orchestral conducting at The Juilliard School studying with David Robertson and received a bachelor in music composition cum laude from Rice University. She also received an artist diploma at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, where she studied under the guidance of Esa-Pekka Salonen in the Negaunee Conducting Program as a Salonen Fellow. She has studied composition with Kurt Stallmann, Arthur Gottschalk, Karim Al-Zand, and Richard Lavenda. She has attended the Gstaad Festival Conducting Academy, the Aspen Conducting Academy, and the Eastern Music Festival. In her free time, she enjoys biking, playing Ultimate Frisbee, shooting film photography, and reading.
