NYC LIFE: Dogs, Music, Sales, Funny Ladies, Museums and More

While we’re waiting for spring, there’s still plenty of winter time fun to be had in our great city. At the top of the list for dog lovers, is the Westminster Dog Show which is the second-longest sporting event in the US. What’s #1? And there are two great shows coming up that Tomatoes will love. One features songs from 1941 and the other features four Tomato comics in the very funny, “Women of a Certain Age” Comedy. Or how about shopping for a cause?

Feb. 6. Dawn Derow in “My Ship: Songs from 1941”

You’re going to want to head to the Laurie Beechman Theater to catch this show.   Dawn Derow’s MY SHIP is built of songs composed and published in 1941. 76 years ago these songs were comforting the hearts and minds of women from that time: young brides married to soldiers headed off to fight in WW2, conventional housewives raising children alone, factory workers like “Rosie the Riveter,” and the entertainers passionately at work to raise the morale of AMERICA through this beautiful music.

MY SHIP ~ songs from 1941~ includes “Chattanooga Choo Choo”, ” Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “The White Cliffs of Dover” among other popular songs of the period. Derow revisits the music that comforted and uplifted a nation until there was peace “At Last.”  The Laurie Beechman Theater,  407 West 42nd Street |February 6th at 7PM

The show features: Carole Montgomery (Showtime Comedy Club All Stars); Veronica Mosey (Tonight Show with Jay Leno); Leighann Lord (HBO); Vanessa Hollingshead (Comedy Central).

Feb. 8-11. Gabrielle Carlson’s Take Heart Event

NYC LIFE: Dogs, Music, Sales, Funny Ladies, Museums and MoreOur beautiful and big-hearted friend, designer Gabrielle Carlson, grew up in South Africa during apartheid with parents who were activists, which gave her a window into the suffering so many experience.  This is one of the many reasons she supports organizations like Sanctuary For Families, a non-profit dedicated to the healing and self-determination of victims of domestic violence, sex trafficking and related forms of gender violence. To celebrate Valentine’s Day she will be having a sale at Gabrielle Carlson Studios of her exquisite clothes, and donating a percentage of the proceeds to this wonderful organization. Gabrielle Carlson Studios, 127 E. 47th Street, NYC.
