Commemoration October 7 One Year Later

Nicole Freezer Rubens writes:

For me, the world has drastically changed since the October 7th terrorist attack when Hamas invaded the southern envelope of Israel. Although this happened far away in the Middle East, repercussions reverberate all over the world. This week we mark one year of heavy-hearted disbelief but a hard fact that the war around Israel rages on and expands, while the remaining 101 souls violently taken hostage, languish in captivity.

On Monday evening at New York’s beautiful Summer Stage Theatre UJA and Hostages and Missing Families Forum hosted a Community-Wide Commemoration October 7 One Year Later. There at dusk as a group, we mourned, remembered, sang, and sought to remain hopeful. It was a fitting and moving production that included, Nova Music Festival survivors, New York’s honored elected officials, and prayer with clergy representing many religions. High school choruses sang as the sun set and were followed by renowned performers David Broza, Regina Spektor and the Israeli Eurovision heroin Eden Golan, who passionately sang October Rain.

The hardest part was to listen to Orna and Ronen Neutra, devoted parents of 23-year-old American Hostage Omer, speak of their ongoing endless miserable battle for the return of their son and all the other hostages.

The overall kinship felt reminded me there is always strength in community, which was exactly what was needed. I was grateful to feel protected by the incredible NYPD.

Walking through the city that night I felt such a strong connection to the people on the streets, many coming from ceremonies of their own. It is one of the countless reasons I love New York. I find great comfort in it, as we are never a silent city. From the lampposts to the ralliers, New Yorkers fight to counter rampant rising antisemitism and to keep the hostages alive and BRING THEM HOME NOW.
