Roving in Quebec

Our roving photographer, Nicole Freezer Rubens, writes:

It’s that time of the year when we relish in the end of long and bright summer days mixed with the anticipation of what autumn will bring. I am fortunate to be back at our family cottage in Quebec. On the shores of Whitefish Lake every August, I see the year I have left in my wake and the potential that lies ahead, not just for myself, but for my loved ones. It is here I can count on regrouping by spending time with family and friends. My life slows down to a pace much calmer than my days in New York City, and each time I appreciate this down time and what it offers.

The views and scenarios are a buffet of sunlight, golden hour, moonshine, shadow, reflection, storm clouds and what often feels like infinite night stars blanketing a deep navy atmosphere. The trees are tall and both needled and leafy. The oranges and reds are waiting in the wings. The centerpiece is the magnificent lake. Its water is sometimes glass-like and often choppy. It is a bit cool for my taste, but on the warmest afternoons, it draws me in to be refreshed. The house is cozy and comfortable. The knotty pine cabin walls hold us all together snugly in the small space we call home. The A-frame and the land contain just the right amount of simplicity I need, to reset and prepare in time for the exciting unknown that lies ahead.
