March 14. My Mother Had Two Faces at the UnitedSolo Festival
My Mother Had Two Faces, is one of this year’s UnitedSolo™ Festival selections. This multi-media solo show is written and performed by Karin Trachtenberg. Directed by and developed with Jessica Lynn Johnson, it is an autobiographical dramatic comedy examining the history of Karin’s relationship with her beautiful Swiss-born mother, whose ideals of beauty included the glamorous Gabors, Marlene Dietrich and other European icons. The show is based on diaries the author/performer found after her death.
Karin Trachtenberg, writer and performer, has appeared in professional theater throughout New England and beyond performing major roles in Greek Drama and Shakespeare productions, most notably playing the titular role in Euripides’ Phaedra at the Hydrama Theater in Greece. Film/tv and commercial credits include Showtime, NBC, and numerous independent films.
The Annual United Solo Festival, the world’s largest solo theatre festival, presents a selection of local and international productions including storytelling, puppetry, dance, multimedia, improv, stand-up, magic, musical, and drama.

Roving in Bergdorf
Our roving photographer, Nicole Freezer Rubens, says life is certainly good at Bergdorf Goodman. Through April, on the 7th floor of the department store, there is an extensive art exhibit of Jojo Anavim’s vibrant and poignant paintings. As a child the artist took classes with Al Baruch, the Disney animator responsible for the iconic Mighty Mouse and Captain Hook. Anavim brings his evident life-long fascination with design and consumerism to each and every work he creates.
He references advertising, nostalgia and luxury goods in his labor intensive, extensively layered multimedia works. Anavim is loyal to the brands we all know and love, that mean something different to each of us. For him, LifeSavers are a tribute to his grandmother who always had a stash in her purse. This reminds me of the porcelain butterfly dish of M&Ms my grandmother always had out.
The art is personal yet universal. To me it is a lively and uplifting demonstration of living in America, commenting on the products and cultures that define his generation and the ones above and below it.
He says “I try to draw out those warm, fuzzy emotions of happiness in people and when I do, I have done my job.” To me this show at Bergdorfs succeeds in spreading joy. Please go and wander through for an uplifting dose of sheer joy.

The tomato behind The Three Tomatoes.
Cheryl Benton, aka the “head tomato” is founder and publisher of The Three Tomatoes, a digital lifestyle magazine for “women who aren’t kids”. Having lived and worked for many years in New York City, the land of size zero twenty-somethings, she was truly starting to feel like an invisible woman. She created The Three Tomatoes just for the fun of it as the antidote for invisibility and sent it to 60 friends. Today she has thousands of friends and is chief cheerleader for smart, savvy women who want to live their lives fully at every age and every stage. She is the author of the novel, "Can You See Us Now?" and co-author of a humorous books of quips, "Martini Wisdom." Because she's lived a long time, her full bio won't fit here.
