NYC LIFE: Holiday Sights, Snowy Owls, Dylan and More
When it comes to beautiful holiday Christmas trees, the tree at Rockefeller is not the only tree in town— two of our favorite Christmas trees are inside museums. The Snowy Owls are a spectacular sight at the Bronx Zoo along with their drive thru holiday lights show. And Long Island has several beautiful drive thru light shows too. We’re excited to see the Bob Dylan movie over the holidays and now you can live like Dylan—his NYC townhouse is for sale. And roving photographer was roving at the latest exhibition at the Poster House in Chelsea featuring the iconic swoosh. Can you guess who it is?
The Museum Trees and Menorah
Come in from the cold at the Met and the Museum of Natural History where you will find two of the most original and beautiful Christmas Trees.
The Met’s magnificently lit, twenty-foot blue spruce looms over a vivid eighteenth-century Neapolitan Nativity scene, surrounded by an abundant array of lifelike figures with silk-robed angels hovering above.
And don’t miss the largest-known silver Hanukkah lamps—a magnificent, late 19th-century silver Menorah made in Lviv, Ukraine.
And this year’s origami tree at the Museum of Natural History features over 1000 handcrafted pieces on its Jumping for Joy tree that celebrates the many animals with a particular prowess that sets them apart—hopping, pouncing, leaping!

Just Frame It
Our roving photographer Nicole Freezer Rubens writes:
“Just Frame It: How Nike Turned Sports Stars Into Superheroes,” accurately sums up what is currently on view at Poster House in Chelsea. This historical ad survey celebrates athletes through advertising. The campaign set in motion an approach that still dominates the industry today. Through artistically photographed graphic portraits this show demonstrates cultural commentary and references glorified Hollywood movie posters. While spotlighting a sport, and professional athletes as icons to be worshipped, they endorse products promoting sales. The optics were enticing when launched and are now feel very nostalgic. Nike was smart and sold much more than footwear. Fans could also purchase affordable posters of the ads, giving the company free and constant marketing.
The emblematic Nike swoosh has become an international language-less symbol. In 1988 the Just Do It slogan was born and will likely never die. The simple swoosh and words imply fearlessness and risk taking that apply universally, well beyond the world of sports.
Walking through this intimate show housed in a beautiful gallery building, visual memories come flooding back. Even for non-sports fans, this display prompts a walk down memory lane. Lace up your sneaks and head to Poster House before the buzzer sounds and this exhibition ends on February 23rd.

The Snowy Owls Have Arrived at the Bronx Zoo
Not only are the holiday lights in full display at the Bronx Zoo for a beautiful drive through, but the Zoo recently welcomed two new snowy owls, making them the latest additions to the zoo’s “Birds of Prey” exhibit. The pair includes a six-year-old female known for her fierce demeanor and a juvenile male with a shy disposition who is still getting used to his new surroundings. Snowy owls are native to Arctic regions and are known for their striking white feathers and impressive size, being the largest bird in North America by weight. A perfect holiday week activity.
Visitors can see these majestic birds in the exhibit, which also houses other impressive raptors like king vultures, golden eagles, and the Cinereous Vulture, the largest eagle in Eurasia. The Bronx Zoo is open daily, and tickets range from $20.95 for children to $30.95 for adults1.
It’s a fantastic opportunity to observe these beautiful creatures up close and learn more about their habitat and behaviors. GET THE DETAILS.
