The Legacy of Women on Their Own in NYC

The Barbizon. By I, Dmadeo, CC BY-SA 3.0, Wikimedia

Women-only hotels in New York City were a fascinating part of the city’s history, offering safe and supportive spaces for single women navigating urban life. These establishments emerged during a time when societal norms often restricted women’s independence, and they provided a unique blend of security, community, and opportunity. 6 Sq Ft has a fascinating article on the history of these hotels, including the iconic Barbizon Hotel for Women, which opened in 1927 and closed in 1981. Notable residents included Sylvia Plath, Joan Didion, Grace Kelly, and Liza Minnelli. READ THIS FASCINAING ARTICLE FROM 6 Sq Ft.

Intrepid Museum Honors Its WWII Crew

The Intrepid Museum in NYC has unveiled an impressive new permanent exhibit that showcases the history of the USS Intrepid and its crew during World War II. A highlight of the exhibit is the fully restored FG-1D Corsair fighter-bomber, a legendary WWII aircraft that was frequently flown from the Intrepid’s flight deck. This particular Corsair is one of the few remaining intact models worldwide and has been meticulously restored to preserve its historical significance. The exhibit also features over 50 never-before-seen artifacts, oral histories from crew members, and interactive displays that provide a deeper understanding of life aboard the aircraft carrier. Visitors can explore personal stories, including those of pilots like Alfred Lerch, who earned “ace in a day” status, and Loren Isley, whose tragic first combat mission is commemorated through artifacts and letters. Roving in Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Our roving photographer Nicole Freezer Rubens writes:

I attended a family wedding at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. It was a perfect setting for the marriage of a native New Yorker city boy and a Connecticut country girl to dance their first dance into their merged future. The simple organic wildflower decor inside the Palm House Conservatory, against the backdrop of the statuesque cherry blossoms and magnolia trees outside, was a delightful balance for them and for the season.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden was founded 115 years old, locking in green space as the urban neighborhood was developed. The Olmsted Brothers, famous for the Central Park plan, designed the original 39-acre garden. Today it spans 52 acres and includes a Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, the original public Japanese garden in the US, a lily pond reflecting pool, the Shakespeare Garden, a rose garden, a bonsai collection, and the iconic Cherry Walk. Membership and endless programming and exhibits are offered on-site. BBG is an extraordinarily hidden treasure that not only makes for a spectacular wedding venue but also a beautiful escape for a contemplative nature walk.

So please raise a glass to Mother Nature and the happy couple, as their lives together are now rooted in the earth and will continue to grow and blossom. Cheers!
