NYC Life: Restaurant News, Cabaret, Comedy, and More
NYC’s only revolving restaurant, The View at the Marriot Marquis, has been reimagined by Danny Meyer and David Rockwell and is now open as a supper club experience. And we have two must-see shows in March featuring some of our favorite people. There’s an extraordinary immersive reality experience that transports you to Paris in 1874 for a night with the French impressionists. Our Long Island reporters reminds us why we love Long Island all year long. And our roving photographer helped a friend clear our mother’s apartment of six decades and discovered many memories.
A Revolving Restaurant with Awesome Views
Danny Meyer’s new restaurant, “The View” at the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square promises to be a major upgrade from the former revolving restaurant that originally opened in 1985, that served buffet food. It has been closed for the last five years and has been reimagined by Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) and David Rockwell’s Rockwell Group.
The restaurant features two distinct levels. The 48th floor has a 20-seat bar and lounge with elevated bar snacks, small plates, and a raw bar. The 47th floor houses the main dining room, which will offer a supper club experience with American classics and live music. The entire dining room will continue to rotate, providing a 360-degree view of the city.
The menu includes dishes like shrimp cocktail, Caesar salad, seared duck breast, wild halibut, steak, and classic desserts like New York Cheesecake. Beverages include an extensive wine selection and creative cocktails. MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS NOW.
March 7. Steve Schalchlin & Friends: From Off-Broadway To Beatles Magic
We’re so excited that our friend Steve Schalchlin , an award-winning composer known for his poignant storytelling and emotionally resonant music, brings his unique sound to Don’t Tell Mama. The New York Times called his work “triumphant and very touching,” and this special concert offers a rare opportunity to experience that magic firsthand. Meet me there.
Along with a special appearance by cabaret legend Sidney Myer, the stellar ensemble features internationally acclaimed vocalist Carl Draper, rising star tenor Blake Zolfo and virtuoso Charlie Viehl on violin, vocals & guitar as well as The Rebel Nerds (South African musician Gavin Gold and Maine native Jake Adams). The evening culminates as Schalchlin and Gold transform into the duo Strawberry Feels NYC. Expect a Sgt. Pepper’s-inspired singalong of the Fab Four that embodies the same spontaneous, magical community spirit they create weekly in Central Park. GET TICKETS NOW.

The Circle of Life
Our roving photographer Nicole Freezer Rubens uncovered 6 decades of memories, She writes:
Part of the circle of life often includes cleaning out the day to day remnants of a life well lived. My childhood next door neighbor’s mother recently passed away, leaving extensive souvenirs of her extraordinary history as a parent, friend, immigrant, hostess, New Yorker, caregiver and always the most glamorous life of the party.
Growing up as only children in buildings with kissing walls, we spent a great deal of time in each other’s apartments. We could even wave to each other from our windows! After 6 decades in the same home, there was much to unearth. My dear friend asked me to help her clean out a few drawers and cabinets. With each item we excavated came a story she remembered or we took wild guesses at an object’s origin and purpose.
Entering the space was a bit of time warp for me as so many remaining details were buried deep in my memory. Seeing the lady-like lamps and the curly cued bar cart, really brought me back. The responsibility of preserving certain objects is a challenging one and decisions made soon after a death can be made in haste. But alas, the swizzle sticks, matchbooks and clip on earrings are only mementos, and the memories and legacies of her will live on even if the costume jewelry does not.
The tomato behind The Three Tomatoes.
Cheryl Benton, aka the “head tomato” is founder and publisher of The Three Tomatoes, a digital lifestyle magazine for “women who aren’t kids”. Having lived and worked for many years in New York City, the land of size zero twenty-somethings, she was truly starting to feel like an invisible woman. She created The Three Tomatoes just for the fun of it as the antidote for invisibility and sent it to 60 friends. Today she has thousands of friends and is chief cheerleader for smart, savvy women who want to live their lives fully at every age and every stage. She is the author of the novel, "Can You See Us Now?" and co-author of a humorous books of quips, "Martini Wisdom." Because she's lived a long time, her full bio won't fit here.
