There is always something unique happening in this great city of ours. Like the commemoration of the Battle of Brooklyn this weekend. The “Canstruction” design competition. A wonderful furniture and art event. And….the Holiday Fairs and Markets are back this month!
Nov. 13. The 240th Commemoration of the Battle of Brooklyn
Head to Fort Tyron Park in Brooklyn on Sunday for a enactment of the Battle of Brooklyn in which General William Howe captured George Washington’s Manhattan stronghold. Fought in 1776, this was the first battle of the American Revolution to be waged after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Starts at noon. Get more details.
Now- Nov. 16. Canstruction
An extraordinary annual design competition and the most unique food charity in the world, Canstruction challenges teams of architects, engineers, and contractors to build sculptures made entirely out of unopened cans of food. The large-scale structures are placed on display and later donated to City Harvest for distribution to those in need. Vote for your favorite sculpture to win The People’s Choice Award! Brookville Place, Vessy Street.
Nov. 10-14. The Salon Art + Design
If you love historical, modern and contemporary furniture, groundbreaking decorative arts, and late 19th and 20th century fine art, head to the Park Avenue Armory. You’ll find designs by the great 20th century masters, as well as creative works by today’s most innovative young artists. Look for Art Deco, Mid Century Modern from America, France, Italy, and Scandinavia paired with the work of young designers. Get the details.

Yep, it’s that time of year when the Holiday Markets open around the city. They are a wonderful NYC tradition and a great place to find unusual gifts for everyone on your list. Each market is a little different, and each has its own special vibe. Here’s the scoop on the markets and the opening dates.
Opened Oct. 29. The Holiday Shops at Bryant Park
This European inspired open-air market features artisans from around the world.
The shops feature food and artisanal boutiques offering exquisite gifts from distinctive apparel to jewelry, decorative goods, local foods, and much more. There’s something for everyone – adults, kids, and more. And the park is so festive with the ice skating rink and restaurants too. Get more details.
Opens Nov. 14. The Grand Central Terminal Holiday Fair
Head to Vanderbilt Hall for one of the longest-running indoor holiday fairs in New York City. You’ll find 40 unique vendors with a focus on American-made and handmade products with locally-sourced materials or a socially-conscious business model. You’ll find artwork, clothing for all ages, men’s/women’s accessories, children’s clothing/toys and home goods. Get the details.
Opens Nov. 17 Union Square Holiday Market
We have to say, when it comes to the vendor selection, we give hands down The Union Square Holiday Market. With its winding aisles of unique gifts created by local craftsmen and artists, it is unique and eclectic holiday experience. New sections this year include Little Brooklyn, a warming station, a kid’s crafts stuiod and live music! Get more details.
Opens Nov. 29. Columbus Circle Holiday Market
This market is an elegant and beautiful place for holiday shopping. Located at the entrance to Central Park, at 59th street and Central Park West, you will find glittering aisles of art, jewelry, home goods and delicious eats from local artisans and designers. Get more details.
