Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion is a wild ride
Our roving photographer, Nicole Freezer Rubens says going to this year’s Costume Institute’s bonanza at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a similar adventure to going on a 4-D experience at an amusement park. The exhibition includes about 220 pieces plucked from the museum’s permanent collection, spanning 4 centuries of couture clothing. Walking through the innovative show one’s five senses are activated while observing some beautiful and some truly disgusting examples of fashion throughout the ages. Smell, touch and sound are woven into experience.
The common underlying theme of the show is nature, and the clothing is grouped together by categories including insects, flowers and shells, broken down to the three main conceptual zones, land, sea and sky.
The idea of sleeping beauties refers to the pieces that are too fragile to be worn, even by a mannequin. Some of the designers include Christian Dior, Stella McCartney, Givenchy, my favorite Elsa Schiaparelli and even H&M.
This unique “adventure” of a show is open through September 2nd. It is truly like nothing I’ve seen, smelled, felt or heard before. GET THE DETAILS.

The tomato behind The Three Tomatoes.
Cheryl Benton, aka the “head tomato” is founder and publisher of The Three Tomatoes, a digital lifestyle magazine for “women who aren’t kids”. Having lived and worked for many years in New York City, the land of size zero twenty-somethings, she was truly starting to feel like an invisible woman. She created The Three Tomatoes just for the fun of it as the antidote for invisibility and sent it to 60 friends. Today she has thousands of friends and is chief cheerleader for smart, savvy women who want to live their lives fully at every age and every stage. She is the author of the novel, "Can You See Us Now?" and co-author of a humorous books of quips, "Martini Wisdom." Because she's lived a long time, her full bio won't fit here.
