Propaganda Wine Bar
My mother’s family dates back to Colonial Virginia, and, unfortunately, the British legacy did reach the kitchen. My mother was a pretty dreadful cook. In fairness, she just wasn’t interested. Hence, there were a lot of mayonnaise sandwiches and “Sorry” for dessert. And lots of things out of a can: asparagus and deviled ham most notably. So, when I read about restaurants in town that were featuring “tinned fish”, I can’t say I leapt to visit them, but I was certainly curious.
I’m happy to report that Foodie Friend #3 and I found the selection of seafood that fit in tiny cans at Propaganda Wine Bar www.propaganda.wine impressive and very satisfying. Mussels in escabeche marinade, octopus in seasoned oil, sardines, anchovies and tuna, of course, all heaped atop crostini smeared with snooty European butter. But wait, there’s more! Propaganda also does divine Italian-influenced charcuteries and cheeses and inspired pizzas, plus a well-curated selection of organic wines. Okay, we didn’t try everything, but we were sold on the whole tapas presentation and funky-cool ambience.
And we felt very hip and happening because we were out after dark downtown in the Arts District. A win-win if I ever saw one.
Logistical note: Visit Hauser & Wirth Gallery down the street and make it that much artsier!

Molly Cheek is a retired actor and Epicurean School graduate. She is best known for her roles in “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” and the “American Pie” franchise, (she baked the pie!). For her second act, she turned to her real love: Eating!!! Molly created a catering and home-cooked gourmet gift basket business, placing her baked goods in coffee joints and on craft service tables around Los Angeles. And even though she’s moved on from that endeavor, she still loves to eat. She starts dreaming of lunch as soon as breakfast is done. Cooking is fun, but eating out is her happy place. And she loves to talk about what she eats…..and what you eat and what people on TV eat…. So, she hopes her enthusiasm for food will ignite some tastebuds and inspire you Tomatoes to try something new.
Love this! I rely on Molly’s taste buds to guide me as I’m notoriously unhip.
Well. I’m thrilled to have someone I trust navigating the LA food scene for me. I’m now keeping a list for my next food adventure. Keep eating, Ms. Molly!
