Winter Veggies

One of the great perks of Southern California is that we can actually grow certain veggies in the winter. Kathy from the Green Thumb Nursery in SoCal is hosting a free digital ‘Winter Veggies’ gardening class on their YouTube channel and it’s free and fun. Now is the perfect time to start planting, Tomatoes.

I start a potted winter veggie garden for the first-time last December and I was surprised at how well it did.Kathy covers a wide range of topics in her ‘Winter Vegetables’ gardening class which includes: info on regular care, maintenance, organic pest control, planting techniques, organic soils, disease control, companion planting, which fertilizers to use and why, demonstrations for an edible garden planter and much more, Tomatoes. Tune in and then go shopping at your local Green Thumb for all your veggie planting needs.  Last year I found that they have the best and healthiest selection.

November 6, 13, & 20. The Greek Trilogy of Luis Alfaro

Available on demand, The Getty is partnering with Center Theatre Group in presenting MacArthur Fellow Luis Alfaro’s Chicanx adaptations of the Greek plays Electricidad, Oedipus El Rey, and Mojada, in streamed readings filmed at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Now that’s a mouthful Tomatoes. With these 2 LA icons producing, it’s bound to be electric and relevant to social issues today.

Alfaro’s award-winning trilogy transplants themes of ancient Greek tragedies into the 21st-century streets of Los Angeles, giving voice to the concerns of the Chicanx and wider Latinx communities.

The Gentle Barn Needs Help

Shopping, Veggies, Greek Trilogies, Gentle Barn

I often write about The Gentle Barn because I love the marvelous work they do in rescuing, rehabilitating and giving sanctuary to severely abused animals. Through interaction with Gentle Barn animals, children learn reverence for all life. Due to unforeseen circumstances their Halloween Fundraiser was destroyed so the Gentle Barn needs your help like never before, Tomatoes.

These are tough times for all nonprofits, but The Gentle Barn is really hurting right now. Powerful Santa Ana winds almost completely destroyed their Haunted Barnyard Halloween Fundraiser and so it had to be canceled entirely.  A large team of volunteers worked tirelessly for weeks to bring this experience to life. After having to cancel other fundraising events due to Covid, the Haunted Barnyard was their creative way to generate much-need donations.  How devastating Tomatoes.

Every dollar raised is significant and directly goes to properly caring for the nearly 200 rescued animals that all have individual needs and treatments, especially at the CA location where the majority are senior animals. If you are able to, please donate to help the Gentle Barn bounce back.
