Sonnets from Suburbia: Christmas Table
Christmas Table
The usual one upmanship prevailed
around the Christmas table where they sat,
pretending all was well while they assailed
and criticized each other, tit for tat.
How humorous that siblings fiercely cling
to ancient arguments when they’re adults.
Through gritted teeth the Yuletide carols sing
and underneath their breath whisp’ring insults.
But mercifully a tender moment came
when Mother softly spoke, remembering him
whose memory could put them all to shame,
their quarrelsomeness offending cherubim.
Relief and tears revived their great good will.
So grateful that they loved each other still.
