Sonnets from Suburbia: Did You Hear?

Did You Hear?

O did you hear a Gelsons had succumbed

to fires raging in the Palisades?

Amongst true tragedies I still was bummed

to think of all that food in marinades.

And all that sushi singed beyond repair,

the pricey produce ripened by the sun.

No more wand’ring the aisles without a care.

Melting ice cream, raw meat beyond well-done.

When favorite destinations disappear,

the touchstones of our everyday routine,

we are unmoored and lost and shed a tear.

Another part of life is less serene.

Don’t minimize these smaller losses or

comfort provided by a groc’ry store.
