Sonnets From Suburbia: McDonalds

McDonalds

McDonalds has a resonance for me.

And so my back can bristle with dismay

when connoisseurs dismiss the history

of my McHours spent in grateful play.

My sons and I took refuge in this place

of blessed sameness, endless happy meals.

Parental separation rocked home base,

our shelter there worth more than thrifty deals.

We huddled at those tables sharing fries

and hoarding ketchup, laughing when we could,

ignoring screaming moms, their babies’ cries.

We reassured each other things were good.

But now with my McMuffin I’m alone.

I miss my boys and text them on the phone.
