Sonnets from Suburbia: My Newspaper’s Still Folded
My Newspaper’s Still Folded
My newspaper’s still folded and unread.
I took a peek at headlines, that is all.
Democracy is threatened, yet not dead.
No powdered blush can masquerade my pall.
Don’t even try to sugarcoat the news.
We have not seen the like of this before
at least not in our country. Can’t excuse
the seeming acquiescence at the door.
I’ve said I’ll keep my inner peace intact,
my heart still open, willing to accept
and understand our diff’rences. In fact
it’s proving difficult and I’m inept.
Needs must protect myself whilst I do seethe.
And will remind myself I need to breathe.
