Sonnets from Suburbian: A Small Moment in the Car
Recalling a small moment in the car
running an errand ‘tween points A and B,
my father said, “Let’s stop right where we are,
and talk about a problem that I see.”
I’d hoped my sigh was barely audible,
since knowing what the topic was at hand.
I knew his need to help was laudable,
but still anticipated reprimand.
The engine idled, smiled to hide my dread,
hands on the wheel, my knuckles gripping white.
“Your marriage seems uneasy’s” what he said.
I turned to hide quick tears from father’s sight.
“Whatever comes, sweetheart, you know I’m here.”
I reached across and dampened his cashmere.
