Dressing for Your Body Type: The Pear Shape

By Lorraine Russo

Are you a pear shape? Dressing for our body type is all about proportion and, unless we have the perfect figure, we accomplish the look through illusion. Due to the fashion trend of embellished tops with sequins, ruffles, and bold prints, it is easier than ever to get your pear shape into proportion. Here are some easy rules to follow for the Pear Shape (smaller top with fuller botton):

  • Show Off Upper Body
  • No Texture Below The Waist
  • Choose Loose Flowing Fabrics
  • Wear Lighter Colors On Top
  • Wear Darker Colors On Bottom

Styles That Work

  • Choose classic blazers (best with shoulder pads)
  • Wrap styles work well
  • Fuller shoulders and detailing add volume
  • Hems should end below hips

SKIRTS

  • Avoid pleats
  • Select soft, drapey fabrics
  • A-Line styles are flattering

PANTS

  • Choose flat fronts
  • Go for straight legs and dark colors, slight flare
  • Avoid pleats for a taller, thinner illusion

DRESSES

  • Opt for A-Line styles to minimize hips
  • Shoulders with flutter sleeves work well

NECKLINES

  • Boat necks and v-necks are most flattering
  • Square-neck tank tops with thick straps will enhance shoulders
