Theatre Buzz: A Girl Grows Wings, The Piano Lesson
A Girl Grows Wings
A Girl Grows Wings is playing at the Los Angeles Theatre Center through November 10th. A girl grows wings when she is seen. When she finds her people. When she throws off fear and finds she is free. And in playwright Marisela Treviño Orta’s A Girl Grows Dreamer Alma (Stefanie Izquierdo) earns her wings. A cross between a play and a dance, A Girl Grows Wings is a rich blend of performance art, movement, video, elaborate costumes and masks. and a soundscape consisting of prerecorded and live music, sound effects and percussion performed by Paula Bucio.
The Piano Lesson
The Piano Lesson is running through November 10 at A Noise Within Redmond Stage. As for Berniece, although she can’t play the piano, she cherishes it and has made sure her daughter Maretha (Madison Keffer) took lessons. Her independence and strength are somehow tied to her family legacy, and keep her at arm’s length from her charming suitor, Avery (Jernard Burks). Avery is an uplifting presence in the play, but he struggles to win Berniece, and to free the Charles house from the ghost tied to the piano.
