Two Great Limited Series

If you have the attention span of a gnat right now, and watching every season of Game of Thrones or some other long running series you missed is just not cutting it, here are two limited series on Netlix that we highly recommend.  And we say limited, each is only four episodes! So binge, or watch at your leisure.

Unorthodox – A Riveting Story Based on a Memoir

This brilliant and totally captivating, based on a memoir, is the story of a young woman, Etsy, who is living unhappily in an arranged marriage in an ultra-Orthodox community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York City. She runs away to Berlin, where her estranged mother lives, and tries to navigate a secular life, discovering life outside her community and rejecting all of the beliefs she grew up with. Her husband, travels to Berlin with his cousin, by order of their rabbi, to try to find her.

This is the first Netflix series to be primarily in Yiddish, lots of subtitles, but easy to follow.  And Etsy is played by a fabulous Israeli actress Shira Haas who we will surely be seeing more of. It’s four one-hour episodes and it is riveting.

Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker

This tells the inspiring story of trailblazing African American entrepreneur Madam C.J. Walker who built a haircare empire that made her America’s first female self-made millionaire in the early party of the 20th century. The fabulous cast is headed by Olivia Spencer, who never disappoints and plays Madam C.J. Walker.  Tiffany Haddish plays her daughter who wants to live her own life. CJ’s rivial is played by Carmen Ejogo. And the incredibly sexy Blair Underwood plays her husband, who is always playing a backseat to CJ’s ambitions, ultimately causing friction in their marriage.  It’s 4 part mini series and a great story.
