Winter Reading List

We want to give special thanks to avid Tomato readers, Joan Pagano and Francene Katzen, for providing their monthly book reviews, along with a few guest reviewers . This month we have two novels and, At Loggerheads and Fates and Furies. Plus, a perfect book for our troubled times by Maria Shriver.

A Beautiful and Thrilling Debut Novel

At Loggerheads by Kristen Ness is set on the fictional Anders Isle in South Carolina.  The main character, Brooke Edens, is a scientist who studies loggerhead sea turtles.  For years the loggerheads have been disappearing from the beach as the development of properties have taken over the island’s natural beauty.  Growing up on the island, Brooke is sad to learn this is happening and wants to figure out what is going on with the sea turtles.  The story started with humanizing the sea turtles by showing us their tears.  We also get a feel for how much Brooke cares for the sea turtles, so as a reader you also want to know more about them.

As the story opens, Brooke has found a mutilated loggerhead on the beach.  On the same day a dead body is found on the beach.  Drew Young, a detective and her closet friend is called to the scene to investigate the murder.  Brooke and Drew are childhood friends and have been romantically involved off and on over the years.  Drew looks to Brooke for help in uncovering clues in the case since she has expertise in sea turtles.  He also thinks the murder and the sea turtle may be connected in some way.

In this book, there is another story line developing, a favorite United States Senator running for the upcoming presidential election as a candidate.  He just happens to be the father of Brooke’s ex-finance, Caldwell Madden.   Caldwell is back on the island for a work trip and to support his father’s presidential campaign.  Having Caldwell back on the island causes Brooke some emotional turmoil.  She questions her decision about breaking up with him and maybe it was a mistake.

Kristen Ness has written an absolute beautiful and thrilling debut novel. It is hard to believe this is her first book, the writing is that good.  The reason I wanted to read this book is I love the low country and I wanted to learn more about sea turtles.  I was happily surprised by the political intrigue, romance, and murder mystery, this book had it all.  Ness also examines the complicated relationship between humans and the wonderful creatures we share in this world.  This book will grab you from the first page and you will not be able to put it down.  I loved it so much.  Highly recommend this book.  It is a five-star read. A Brilliantly Crafted Novel

Fates and Furies” by Lauren Groff is a literary feat that delves into the intricate layers of a marriage, unraveling the hidden complexities and diverse perspectives within the relationship between Lotto and Mathilde.

At its core, the novel presents a duality in storytelling, divided into two distinct parts. The first section, “Fates,” follows Lotto’s narrative, painting him as a larger-than-life figure, an aspiring playwright with a charmed existence. Groff masterfully constructs Lotto’s world, exploring his aspirations, insecurities, and the intricacies of his relationships.

The second part, “Furies,” serves as a stunning revelation, shifting the spotlight to Mathilde, Lotto’s enigmatic and fiercely independent wife. Here, Groff skillfully peels back the layers, exposing the hidden truths, secrets, and sacrifices that underpin their marriage. Mathilde’s perspective offers a compelling counterpoint, adding depth and a dramatic dimension to the story previously narrated by Lotto.

Groff’s prose is exquisite! Her vivid descriptions, rich metaphors, and lyrical language fill the narrative with a profound sense of depth and emotion. The characters are intricately crafted, flawed yet compelling, and their evolution throughout the story is both poignant and deeply human.

“Fates and Furies” exceeds in its exploration of perception versus reality, the subjectivity of truth within a relationship, and the nuanced layers of love, ambition, and betrayal. Groff masterfully navigates themes of power dynamics, ambition, and the complexities of human relationships, creating a mesmerizing tale that lingers in the mind long after the final page.

Overall, “Fates and Furies” is a brilliantly crafted novel that weaves together intricate storytelling, complex characters, and profound thematic exploration, making it a captivating and thought-provoking read that resonates deeply with its audience. GET THE BOOK.

If you love literature and imagination, check out Lauen Groff’s follow up book, “Matrix,” and her new book, “The Vaster Wilds.” Her wordsmithing is breathtaking, and she masters a variety of topics with equal competency and historical perspective.
